Red Cross Volunteer Describes Sandy Hook Victims Families ... - first

Landov

By Debbie Emery - Radar Reporter

Emergency services, media outlets and charitable organizations have all flooded into the small?Connecticut?city of Newtown, and RadarOnline.com exclusively spoke to one Red Cross volunteer who sacrificed his time during the busy holiday season to help the victims of Friday's horrific shooting massacre.

"All of the TV cameras -- it looks like every television camera that was ever built! -- were set up on the small street aimed at the Sandy Hook Fire Station," Dave Kemp, of nearby Vernon,?Connecticut, told Radar, as he compared the loss and mourning to that of Ground Zero after 9/11 or New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

PHOTOS: The Victims Of The Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre

"The families are all going to Reed Middle School, which is where we have been feeding them and where the mental health workers congregated to receive and counsel everyone in any way they could. The remaining children were also taken care of there by trained adolescent experts and all the little brothers and sisters of the victims were given toys."

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother Nancy in her bed before taking an arsenal of her firearms to the school. As police drew in on him, he shot himself in the head.

The victims who lost loved ones in the shower of bullets that left 20 children and six adults dead were joined by brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles at the Red Cross support center as the community rallied together to help each other.

PHOTOS: President Obama & Mourners At Sandy Hook Vigil

"The parents were in various conditions emotionally. They all stayed for several hours and I was surprised to see that, but I got the sense that they were really getting a lot out of it," Kemp told Radar.?"There was over 100 case workers and volunteers and 40 or 50 family members at any one point in a day.
"The youngest kids really didn't seem to understand what was happening, they had a nice day and got to play and have a lot of attention and?supervision," he explained. "The little ones seemed happy and smiling when they left. It was like they had gone to the park - they just don't understand what death is.

"What was harder is when there was a group of six or eight teenage girls together and they were holding each other up. They were struggling."
Surrounded by crying and grieving parents who had lost their beloved children, the loving father and new grandfather revealed that he was most touched when they thanked him for his help.

PHOTOS: Celebs Involved In Murder

"That they had been through all of this and then still thanked me for being there, that was hard for me as I didn't expect it," he said.

"It is very difficult to accept their appreciation and say that to them, you just choke up. I feel bad that I can't respond fluently and easily, I found it difficult to express myself back but this is the least I could do.

"The Red Cross has brought a great number of licensed mental health counselors here. There are so many other agencies too -- ? Save The Children, the Southern Baptists, the Billy Graham people ? who all gather when there are disaster situations.

PHOTOS: Stars Who Died In Bizarre Ways

"It is hard to judge how the atmosphere in Newtown has changed as I wasn't here before, but everyone has said it was close-knit and friendly in the first place, but certainly those who live here are doing what they can."

What is next to decide for the rural New England town is the future of the surviving students and how they will get back into the routine of school in the wake of such a tragedy.

"It has just been decided that some of the smallest children will be going to school in one of the nearby towns," he explained. "And there is quite a bit of conversation about whether they will ever open the elementary school up again.?That remains to be seen."

PHOTOS: America's Unknown Psycho Serial Killers

"Anyone can understand how hard it must be to go back there. I do not know what that is going to result in. All the children are off school right now, two funerals occurred on Monday and the rest will happen over the next few days so there is a lot of the grief counseling going on."

With Christmas just around the corner, the volunteers are hoping that their work will be done in Newtown by the weekend so they can return to their own loved ones ? and no doubt hug them even tighter than ever.

"I got home on Saturday night, and my wife asked how it went, and I couldn't speak, I couldn't get the words out of my mouth," Kemp revealed to Radar. "I know that I will need some mental health help myself as our counselors take care of us too. This is only day three for us, we're spending all of our adrenalin and energy here and really not sleeping well."

PHOTOS: The Most Intriguing Cold Cases In History

A veteran of many years volunteering for the Red Cross, the huge-hearted man revealed that the devastating aftermath in his home-state is one of his most challenging assignments yet.

"The hardest ones have been Ground Zero in New York after 9/11, in 2005 at Hurricane Katrina, then about 18 months ago there were 30 or 40 tornadoes that hit Alabama and tore it to shreds, that was tough," he revealed.

"This is among the most difficult after being out in the field 46 times."

South Korea votes in tight race on economy and jobs

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Koreans voted on Wednesday in freezing winter temperatures for a new president in a battle between the daughter of their former military ruler and a man her father jailed for political activism.

The next president of Asia's fourth largest economy will have to deal with a hostile North Korea, under young and untested new leader Kim Jong-un, and a slowing domestic economy.

Conservative candidate Park Geun-hye had a narrow lead in polls published last week, the last allowed under election rules. If she wins, she would be the first woman leader of the country, which is still largely run by men in dark suits.

"I trust her. She will save our country," said Park Hye-sook, 67, who voted in the same polling station as her namesake and was out with a friend doing her morning exercises when she heard that Park Geun-hye was about to arrive.

"Her father ... rescued the country," the housewife and grandmother said.

The 60-year-old daughter of Park Chung-hee has pledged dialogue with impoverished North Korea, whose rocket launch last week reinforced fears it is developing a long-range missile. She has promised a tough line on the isolated North's nuclear and missile programmes.

Park, wearing a red muffler, was cheered by crowds chanting her name as she entered the polling station and urged voters to "open a new era".

Her left-of-centre challenger, Moon Jae-in, is a former human rights lawyer who has promised unconditional aid for North Korea and to reintroduce an engagement policy that ushered in closer ties between the Cold War rivals.

Those ties started unraveling with the shooting by North Korea of a tourist from the South in 2008, and deteriorated with the sinking of a South Korean warship in 2010, which the North denies, and the shelling of a South Korean island the same year.

Moon cast his ballot in the southern city of Busan and said voters left disenchanted by five years of conservative rule under Lee Myung-bak, who is constitutionally limited to a single term, had the chance to "change the world with their vote".

GANGNAM STYLE PROMISE

More than 40 million people are eligible to vote and political analysts have said turnout has to be in the high 70 percent range for Moon to win. Moon has promised to perform global pop sensation Psy's Gangnam Style "horse dance" if turnout is 77 percent.

The polls opened at 6 a.m. (2100 GMT) and close at 6 p.m. (0900 GMT), when the three network television stations will announce the result of a jointly conducted exit poll.

Five hours into voting, 10.7 million South Koreans amounting to 26.4 percent of the electorate, had braved freezing temperatures to cast their ballots, a higher turnout than five years ago, according to the state election commission.

The cold weather -- minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) in the capital Seoul early on Wednesday and forecast to remain below freezing throughout the day -- was likely to have an impact on turnout, which had been expected to be high.

Many analysts forecast a tight race between the two front-runners, who were separated by as little as 0.5 percentage point in some polls, with Moon making late gains on Park.

While Park's bid to become president has stirred debate and divisions about her father's rule, and the prospect of a nuclear-armed North Korea also hangs over the country, the main issue in the election has been the economy.

While outwardly successful and home to some of the world's biggest companies, such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Hyundai Motor Co, South Korean society has become steadily more unequal.

The hundreds of thousands of graduates that its universities churn out each year complain they have trouble finding decent jobs and, while South Korea is now the 29th richest country in the world in terms of gross domestic product per capita, income differentials have widened sharply.

Park has proposed more social welfare under what she terms "economic democratization" but has given few specifics. Her party says it will not spend more money to boost the economy.

Park, who has never married nor had children, has advocated a broader welfare policy than when she ran five years ago, when she failed to win the conservative presidential nomination, and has proposed paying for it by cutting wasteful spending.

Moon, by contrast, has proposed an $18 billion jobs package, boosting maternity pay and taxing the super-rich. He has also pledged to repeal a controversial free trade agreement with the United States.

While North Korea was the main issue for just 4.7 percent of voters, according to a poll by broadcaster SBS taken last week, the 18-year rule of Park's father still divides Koreans and will be on the minds of many voters.

The elder Park took power in a 1961 coup and helped push South Korea from poverty to developed nation status, but at the cost of repressing human rights and democracy.

His wife was shot by a North Korean-backed assassin who was gunning for him in 1974 and his then young daughter took on the role of South Korea's first lady until Park's own killing in 1979 by his security chief after a drunken night out.

Park has at times sought to appeal to the spirit that her father embodied. On Tuesday she evoked his economic call to arms of "Let's Live well" in a bid to rally her party faithful.

But at other times she has stumbled over apologies to victims of her father's rule and sought to appeal to her mother's softer image.

Moon, jailed in 1975 when he was a student activist, has attacked Park "for living the life of a princess". His only political experience was as an aide to former President Roh Moo-hyun, who was his law partner.

A chimney fire damaged a home at 1814 W. Mission in northwest Spokane this morning just after 9 a.m. Three residents made it safely out of the home, as did two cats and several birds.

Firefighters found smoke and flames on an exterior wall on the first floor when they arrived, according to a Spokane Fire Department press release. The fire was spreading to the second floor and attic. Crews had to rip open the walls and attic to put out the fire.

Investigators determined that the fire was caused by a wood stove chimney that set the wall on fire, the press release said. Damage is estimated to be at least $20,000. The Red Cross is assisting the?residents.

tulsidas toenail: jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80?s was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I?m driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Olushola Otenaike is an online shopping expert.

Jacintha Saldanha, Nurse Duped In British Royal Hoax, Died By Hanging, Coroner Rules

LONDON (AP) ? A nurse who took a hoax call from Australian DJs about the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge apparently killed herself three days later, with a coroner's officer saying Thursday she was found hanging by the neck and a detective saying she left three notes.

Coroner's officer Lynda Martindill told an inquest that nurse Jacintha Saldanha was found hanging by a scarf from a wardrobe in her room Friday by a colleague and a member of security staff at London's King Edward VII Hospital.

Police detective chief inspector James Harman said Saldanha, 46, also had injuries to her wrists. He told the coroner's inquest that two notes were found at the scene and another among Saldanha's belongings. He said there were no suspicious circumstances, meaning nobody else was involved in Saldanha's death.

As well as examining the notes, he said police were interviewing the nurse's friends, family and colleagues and looking at emails and phone calls to establish what led to her death. The case is being treated as an apparent suicide.

Saldanha answered the phone last week when two Australian disc jockeys called to seek information about the former Kate Middleton, who was being treated for severe morning sickness. The DJs impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, and Saldanha was duped into transferring them to a nurse caring for the duchess, who revealed details about her condition.

Australia's media watchdog, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, said on Thursday it was launching an official investigation into whether the radio station, 2DayFM, breached its broadcasting license conditions and the industry code of practice

Coroner Fiona Wilcox opened and adjourned Saldanha's inquest until March 26.

Wilcox expressed "my sympathies to her family and everybody who has been touched by this tragic death."

98% Brooklyn Castle

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (1)

"Brooklyn Castle" easily checkmates your inner cynic.

Katie Dellamaggiore's lively and affecting documentary introduces us to a cast of characters that's very winning (in both senses of the word).

It's not To Sir, With Love: It's fierce ambition, the channeling of emotion, and hours of drilling.

Enlightening, inspiring and expertly crafted.

An irresistibly uplifting doc.

Castle is suspenseful, funny and, particularly in its depiction of the challenging home lives of some of the kids, moving.

... a powerful and positive story about dedicated teachers helping kids succeed no matter what their circumstances

Like chess, not exactly a high-energy experience but seeing what these kids accomplish, seemingly against all odds is breathtaking all the same.

...provides a corrective to the popular image of American schools as obsessed with sports and popularity, and it makes the strongest possible case for funding after-school activities.

Chess, brilliant young students and great teachers potent mix.

The I.S. 318 team? A delightfully motley, vulnerable, multicultural bunch, whose addiction to chess has allowed them higher aspirations for top high schools and, eventually, college and careers. You will root for them like crazy.

We meet five of the team's members and several of their teachers; by its end, you'll be rooting for them all.

"BROOKLYN CASTLE is a compelling, engaging and inspiring Documentary, featuring Junior High kids that you can relate to. Even if you don't know the game of Chess all too well, it won't stop you from enjoying this pleasant film."

Brooklyn Castle provides a snapshot of indomitable American can-do attitude, and gives one hope.

The admirable Brooklyn Castle transcends its formula to become an optimistic look at extracurricular education and young people.

Great story, well-made, what's not to like?

It's clear that chess isn't just a game; for these students, it can also open doors.

From bus driver to VP: Who is Chavez' successor?

For six hours, surgeons in Havana operated on ailing?Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, working to delicately remove the malignant cancer tissues that have sent him to the operating table three times since 2011. ?The outlook for Chavez?s recovery is bleak, according to government officials, leading many to speculate about the man he has named his successor, the bus-driver-turned-politician,?Vice President Nicol?s Maduro.

In the wake of Chavez?s announcement that his cancer had returned, Maduro has been increasingly thrust onto the global stage. Speaking on national television, he cautioned Venezuelans that they should expect to face ?hard, complex and difficult days,? as the 58-year-old president recovers from his surgery. ?Though Chavez won his third six-year term in national elections this?October, his illness may prevent him from fulfilling the responsibilities of office. If that happens, Chavez has prepared his?chavistas?to fall lock-step behind Maduro, said Mary Murray, an NBC senior producer and Latin American specialist. ?His supporters are closing ranks,? Murray said. ??They?ve said ?we?re going to keep power no matter what.??

Maduro would then stand to inherit the world?s largest oil reserves, but also the onerous task of steering a country plagued by high inflation, an 8.2% unemployment rate and rampant crime. Throughout his tenure, Chavez has been able to leverage his personality against the nation?s strife. He appears on his own television show, tweets out new policies and orders supporters to rally in the streets.

But Maduro may not be able to use the same tactics to pacify the people, said Stephen Johnson, director of the Americas program for the Center for Strategic and International Studies. ??There is the issue of whether he has the charisma to maintain following and keep public?attention?focused on himself as opposed to on Venezuela?s main problems,? he said.

Known as a party loyalist, Maduro started out as a bus driver for the Caracas Metro and rose slowly through the ranks. He went on to become a union organizer and then a member of the national assembly. He was eventually appointed foreign minister, a post that required him to tout Chavez?s agenda in diplomatic circles. Some?members of the Venezuelan diaspora?see that assignment as a natural stepping stone towards the presidency.

?I believe that his experience meeting other high-ranking politicians from all over the world has given him exposure on a global scale and has definitely given him some training if it comes to him taking over,? said mechanical engineer Emerson Guti?rrez, 36, a Minnesota resident who was born and raised in La Grita, Venezuela.

Maduro could, however, face challenges within his own party. ?The vice president?s lack of connections with the country?s?armed forces?could put him at a political disadvantage to potential rivals in the long run, such as former lieutenant commander Diosdado Cabello, the head of the parliament.

?I envision a power struggle between these two individuals,? said Carlos Sardi, a bankruptcy attorney who immigrated to Miami when he was 15. ?Venezuelan history has demonstrated that those who control the arms will go into power.?

After becoming president in 1998, Chavez used his rapport with the military to cement his power. ?The reality is, Chavez is a dictator?camouflaged?as a democrat,? said Sardi. ?When I hear Mr. Chavez talking, I feel ashamed of being a Venezuelan.?

Chavez may well recover from his surgery and return to office in good health, leaving Maduro with heightened public stature but no additional powers. This scenario leads some to think Maduro?s sudden prominence was merely a political?maneuver?designed to bolster support for Chavez?s party in the upcoming state governor elections.

?Chavez has a history of rotating loyalists around, and one reason, which is pure speculation on my part, is to keep them slightly off-balance so none of them would be able to amass too much influence or in any way approach equivalency with his influence,? said the Center for Strategic and International Studies? Stephen?Johnson.

International monitors were not allowed to observe?Venezuela?s last election. The opposition, led by Henrique Capriles, came closer to victory than any previous opponent but in the end 54 percent of the electorate appear to have voted for Chavez. His popular support almost ensures that, were he to hand over power, many Venezuelans would continue to support his party. But no matter who takes over in 2013, said Carlos Sardi, they would have a negligible impact on the country?s most deep-rooted problems of poverty and corruption.

?Even if you speculate what might happen,? Sardi said, ?I don? t see any of them getting out of the dark tunnel that Venezuela is in.?

France's Hollande backs first lady in defamation case

PARIS (Reuters) - President Francois Hollande has written a letter supporting partner Valerie Trierweiler in her defamation suit against authors of a tell-all biography, lawyers said on Monday, prompting accusations of political interference.

Trierweiler brought the case against the authors of the "La Frondeuse", or "The Rebel", a saga detailing the former journalist's relations with France's political elite including Hollande himself and his ex-partner Segolene Royal.

Lawyers for Trierweiler, who is seeking 80,000 euros in damages, produced the letter in a Paris court as evidence supporting allegations of defamation and invasion of privacy by the two writers and their publishing house, Moment.

In tiny, handwritten script on paper with no presidential markings, Hollande criticizes the authors for "pure invention" in a passage concerning him.

The Socialist president was acting as a private citizen when he wrote the letter because the passage in question concerned him directly, an official in his office told Reuters.

Critics accused Hollande of using his political clout to influence the outcome of the case.

"We are witnessing a total confusion of roles in the executive branch whereby the president intervenes in a legal affair just because he wants to," said Valerie Debord, spokeswoman for the centre-right UMP party.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls also wrote to the court to condemn passages in which he is quoted speaking about Trierweiler. His letter is typed on a ministry letterhead.

"They're using a nuclear bomb to smash a fly," Yves Derai, head of the Moment publishing house, told reporters.

The messy love triangle involving Hollande, Trierweiler and Royal - a former Socialist presidential candidate - has filled French media for months. The episode brings yet more unwelcome attention onto Hollande and Trierweiler, who are not married, just as she was trying to keep out of the limelight.

Hollande was forced to call Trierweiler into line this year after she tweeted her support for a candidate competing against Royal during a legislative election in western France.

The episode undermined Hollande's efforts during his campaign to present himself as "Mr Normal", in contrast with what many viewed as the excessively flashy style of former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Hollande is struggling to reverse a slide in his popularity, according to several polls, linked to high unemployment and to the sense that he exerts insufficient control over his cabinet.

As much as it is advantageous to us, it is also an environmental threat as automobile industry releases millions of tonnes of waste material every year. This i where salvage auto yards come into the picture. They strive to recycle these waste auto parts and utilize the wrecked cars in all the ways possible.

The percentage of car body parts that can be recycled from those thousands of disposed cars is twice the number of the cars in the auto junkyards and auto salvage yards. So one can imagine the money auto dealers can make in this business. Some of the parts that can be reused over and over from salvage cars are bumpers, wheels, motors and transmissions or gear boxes.

Before you purchase these used auto parts or other car body parts, there are certain important things you need to consider. We mention here some ways to maintain them.

Some famous websites are www.usedpartx.com, www.used-car-parts-exchange.com, www.salvageautoparts.com, www.salvageauto.com, www.carbodyparts.net, www.iautobodyparts.com, www.autobodypartsonline.com from where you can purchase products.

Keep a regular update about how the product is functioning. This is very important as you purchased and are using already used the product; probably for more than a year. So its wear and tear period is more than 1 year. They may not cause any sudden problem but it is not recommended to purchase used auto body parts if one is using the vehicle for long distant journeys. Leukemia patients remain in remission more than two years after engineered T cell therapy

Dec. 9, 2012 ? Nine of twelve leukemia patients who received infusions of their own T cells after the cells had been genetically engineered to attack the patients' tumors responded to the therapy, which was pioneered by scientists in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Penn Medicine researchers will present the latest results of the trial December 10 at the American Society of Hematology's Annual Meeting and Exposition.

The clinical trial participants, all of whom had advanced cancers, included 10 adult patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and two children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Two of the first three patients treated with the protocol at HUP -- whose cases were detailed in the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine in August 2011 -- remain healthy and in full remissions more than two years after their treatment, with the engineered cells still circulating in their bodies. The findings reveal the first successful and sustained demonstration of the use of gene transfer therapy to turn the body's own immune cells into weapons aimed at cancerous tumors.

"Our results show that chimeric antigen receptor modified T cells have great promise to improve the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma," says the trial's leader, Carl June, MD, the Richard W. Vague Professor in Immunotherapy in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and director of Translational Research in Penn's Abramson Cancer Center. "It is possible that in the future, this approach may reduce or replace the need for bone marrow transplantation."

The results pave the way for a potential paradigm shift in the treatment of these types of blood cancers, which in advanced stages have the possibility of a cure only with bone marrow transplants. That procedure requires a lengthy hospitalization and carries at least a 20 percent mortality risk -- and even then offers only a limited chance of cure for patients whose disease has not responded to other treatments.

The protocol for the new treatment involves removing patients' cells through an apheresis process similar to blood donation, and modifying them in Penn's cell and vaccine production facility. Scientists there reprogram the patients' T cells to target tumor cells through a gene modification technique using a HIV-derived lentivirus vector. The vector encodes an antibody-like protein, called a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR), which is expressed on the surface of the T cells and designed to bind to a protein called CD19.

The modified cells are then infused back into the patient's body following lymphodepleting chemotherapy. Once the T cells start expressing the CAR, they focus all of their killing activity on cells that express CD19, which includes CLL and ALL tumor cells, and normal B cells. All of the other cells in the patient that do not express CD19 are ignored by the modified T cells, which limits systemic side effects typically experienced during traditional therapies.

In addition to initiating the death of the cancer cells, a signaling molecule built into the CAR also spurs the cell to produce cytokines that trigger other T cells to multiply -- building a bigger and bigger army until all the target cells in the tumor are destroyed.

In the patients who experienced complete remissions after treatment, the CAR T cells exhibited vigorous proliferation after infusion, with the most robust expansion activity usually occurring between 10 and 31 days after infusion. Each of these patients developed a cytokine release syndrome -- marked by fever, nausea, hypoxia and low blood pressure -- which doctors treated when needed with the anti-cytokine agent tocilizumab. Ultimately, the modified T cell treatment eradicated large amounts of tumor in these patients.

Tests of patients with complete responses also show that normal B cells have been eliminated along with their tumors. Since these cells are important for the body's immune system to fight infection, the patients now are receiving regular gamma globulin treatments as a preventive measure. No unusual infections have been observed.

In August 2012, the University of Pennsylvania and Novartis announced an exclusive global research and licensing agreement to further study and commercialize these novel cellular immunotherapies using chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) technologies. As part of the transaction, Novartis acquired exclusive rights from Penn to CART-19, the therapy that was the subject of this clinical trial and which is now known as CTL019. Together, Penn and Novartis will build a first-of-its-kind Center for Advanced Cellular Therapies (CACT) in Philadelphia, which will be devoted to the discovery, development and manufacturing of adoptive T cell immunotherapies through a joint research and development program led by scientists and clinicians from Penn and Novartis. Patients seeking information about this trial may visit http://www.penncancer.org/Tcelltherapy/.

Three abstracts about the new research will be presented during the ASH meeting. David Porter, MD, director of Blood and Marrow Transplantation in the Abramson Cancer Center, will give an oral presentation of Abstract #717 on Dec. 10. Michael Kalos, PhD, director of the Translational and Correlative Studies Laboratory at Penn, will give an oral presentation on Abstract #756 on Dec. 10. Stephan Grupp, MD, PhD, director of Translational Research in the Center for Childhood Cancer Research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, will present a poster of Abstract #2604 on Dec. 9.

CYBER LAWS IN INDIA: Cyber Law In India For Facebook And Google

Facebook and Google are Internet intermediaries within the meaning of cyber law of India. As internet intermediaries, Facebook and Google are required to comply with various national and international laws.

Internet intermediaries in India are required to follow certain due diligence requirements under the cyber law of India incorporated in the information technology act, 2000 (IT Act 2000). If they fail to observe such cyber due diligence, the safe harbour protection available under the IT Act 2000 is lost.

While pre screening of contents and expecting Internet intermediaries like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo, YouTube, Linkedin, etc to keep a vigil watch upon the Internet is simply unreasonable and unrealistic yet asking Internet intermediaries to block or remove offending contents, after they have been duly notified in this regard, is a genuine need and reasonable demand.

Such removal or non removal of objectionable and offending contents cannot be considered to be right or wrong as per Internet intermediaries or Indian government?s viewpoint. Rather an independent analysis of the same must be made by courts keeping in mind the facts and applicable laws.

Further, there must be uniformity in application of Indian laws to all in similar situations. If there is a discrimination against foreign companies and favour for domestic companies, this undermines the confidence and trust of online community world over. For instance, recently Reliance and Airtel blocked websites in India whose legality is still doubtful. Department of information technology (DIT) must investigate such blocking in order to rule out favoritism for domestic companies.

It has also been reported that social media websites users in other states of India are planning to engage in legal battles in such states to access any blockage of such websites. Legally they can do so but in the long run such a move would be counter productive.

In the past, the argument of being a subsidiary has kicked back and now the parent company has to face the trial. Even if the subsidiaries are exempted from any criminal liability, the liability of parent company is now emerging as an even bigger issue. Let us see how Indian Courts would decide these cases.

I grew up in a family of card game players. Rook and Pinochle were our games of choice, but I've been known to play Euchre (grudgingly) and Pitch (not quite so grudgingly) in a pinch. Dutch Blitz, Canasta, Phase 10 (which I later disavowed): all of these have crossed my table willingly.

Because of this, there remains a soft spot in my heart for small-box card games. I love ones that facilitate conversation while also offering interesting gameplay. Does Little Devils fit into this ideal niche for me? Read on!

?
?
How It Works
Little Devils is a trick-taking game for 3-6 players. The deck is comprised of cards numbered 1-54, and each card has a number of little devils pictured next to the number (from zero to five). The game is a little similar to Hearts in that the lowest score will win, and players are trying to avoid collecting the little devils.

At the start of the game, the deck is formed by shuffling together nine cards per player, using the lowest numbers (for example, cards 1-27 are used for three players, 1-36 for four players, and so on). Each player is dealt a hand of nine cards.

The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick. When leading, a player may play any card except a card that has five little devils pictured (unless, of course, that player only has five-devil cards).

The interesting twist on trick-taking games in Little Devils is that it is not the leader?who determines how the trick is won but the second player. If the second player plays higher than the first player, the highest card above the lead card will win the trick. If he plays lower than the first player, the lowest card lower than the lead card will win the trick. The catch is that if a player doesn't play the same way as the second player, the trick is reversed, usually meaning that the person who couldn't follow the second player takes the trick.

So, an illustration: Phyllis leads the 18. Jordan follows with the 16, determining that the lowest?played card will take the trick. Sherman plays a 17, and Timmy plays a 14, but Norman cannot play lower than 18. He plays a 20, and thus he takes the trick. (If Norman hadn't been playing, Timmy would have taken the trick in this example.)

The winner of the previous trick leads the next, which ensures that it is impossible for a player to take two tricks in a row.

A round is finished once all nine tricks are played. Players count the little devils on the cards in the tricks they've won, and this is added to their running score. After the round when one or more players reach 100, the player with the lowest score wins the game.

@FarmerLenny's take:

Little Devils packs a great deal of fun into a small box. It's an interesting twist on trick-taking games that offers great tension and interesting decisions in a compact play experience that is customizable to what players want. And behind all of that completely true jargon, it is?fun?to boot...and this despite the fact that I almost always lose.
What I like about Little Devils the most is its simplicity. Yes, the game is in many ways like Hearts, but it's simpler than Hearts. There are no suits to deal with, for one thing, and the numbers follow a strict numeric sequence. You don't have to remember, "Now which queen is it that's worth all those points again?" Particularly bad players who seem like they just might inadvertently shoot the moon in Hearts are given a reprieve in Little Devils: it's impossible to take two tricks in a row. The game is easy to explain (even if it takes a round or two to get the hang of), and the removal of extraneous game pieces (even just the suits!) makes the game feel streamlined and quickens its pace. The artwork, while not my style, is also more evocative than a traditional deck of cards. I also like that Little Devils offers a good range of interesting decisions. Because the game is played with perfect knowledge of what's in the deck, it allows players to make better choices about which cards to play. There is some cleverness in how the devils are distributed among the deck. For example, the five-devil cards all fall on the fives starting at fifteen (15, 25, 35, 45), and the cards that immediately surround the five-devil cards are zero-devil cards. Drawing out the five-devil cards to make a mess of your opponents' score is easier with these surrounding cards, but it also can feel like a waste to lead a zero-devil card--leading is the opportunity to get rid of your high-devil cards. I like that the game has some aspects of uncertainty, because this keeps the tension level high. The game scales pretty well from three to six players, though the game plays differently with each group. Because there are fewer cards in play (and fewer players to play them) in the three-player game, it's possible to be much more calculating in your plays. The guys I played three-player with likened it to volleyball: bump, set, spike. Most turns in a hand followed this progression with very few upsets. The first player plays a higher-devil card, the next player hews as closely as possible to this card, the third player either threads the needle (if possible) or throws off whatever slough he'd like to get rid of. It's not that this isn't fun--because it is, surprisingly--but it's a?very?different experience than playing with five or six players, or even with four. With more players, certainty is nigh impossible, especially at the beginning of the round, so there is a lot more tension. Each card played feels like the winding of a bomb. Will your card be the one that causes it to explode? Because of this added excitement, I prefer playing with more players. (Also, I think these short filler games almost all follow the "the more the merrier" philosophy.) A brief word on the components. Little Devils comes in a tin box that protects the cards, looks nice, and seems high quality. The bummer about it is that the necessary game components for Little Devils (54 cards) are easily pocket-sized, but the container that comes with the game is not. (Of course, there's an easy remedy: take just the cards with you.) The cards are on a very nice linen stock that's easy to shuffle, and the design of the cards is clean, with all information being easy to read (though a few players commented on the 6s and 9s being hard to discern--I didn't see a problem with these). The only negative is that because the cards are black, they show wear around the edges quickly. This shouldn't be too big of a deal, though, as I'm guessing most people who play Little Devils won't be searching for marked cards.
There are a few things that some players may not like so much. First, the game, while offering interesting choices, is also very dependent on luck. If you have lots of very high and very low cards, it can be harder to empty your hand without taking the lion's share of the devils. Bluffing and clever game play can take you part of the way, but a lot of the game is determined by the cards you were dealt. (I should say, though, that because it's impossible to take two tricks in a row, the points are usually spread pretty evenly over the course of a round.) Another thing I'm not crazy about is the flavor ("theme" seems a bit too strong a word for this game). The artwork on the cards is playful, but it still depicts, as you might expect, "little devils." For me, this wasn't an issue: it's very clear even from the artwork that you want as few of these devils as possible, and there's nothing offensive about it. But it could be a stumbling block in the family context. Even though the artwork is playful, I'm not sure this is a game I would play with my niece and nephew, for example, even though I think they're old enough to understand the rules of the game. Again, the only issue is the artwork, but it will be a turn-off to some.

Finally, the game length on the box says 15-20 minutes, but this hasn't matched up with my experience. It's true that a hand takes a short amount of time (five to seven minutes or so), but for one player to reach 100 points has taken consistently around 45 minutes (regardless of the number of players). Now, it's possible to change the point threshold for the game to get it down into the 15-20 minute window (an easy way to shorten the game if you're in a pinch, and really, the real fun is in individual hands), but to play the game as written has taken longer than advertised, and that was with us playing just about as fast as we could, short of mindlessly tossing cards from our hands. Again, this is an easy thing to fix, either by setting a lower threshold or by using a time limit.

These "cons" are mostly quibbles. Little Devils is easy to play, and while it isn't the most strategy-intensive game, there are still interesting choices to be made. But more than this, the game is just?fun. I like games like Through the Desert, but I'm pretty sure I've played entire games without saying a word to my opponents. Little Devils is not like that. It's fun and fast, and while it's not exactly a "take-that" style game, the tension of getting rid of devils (only possible by giving them to someone else) electrifies the atmosphere. I've not played the game at a silent table, even among usually reticent opponents. ?And that is why I think Little Devils will keep hitting the table again and again: it is a great facilitator for conversation, and everyone I've played it with has enjoyed themselves (some even asking, "Now where can I pick up a copy?"). It provides a fun play experience that offers enough choices to be satisfying and is quick enough to not overstay its welcome. In the ?short, small-box game category, especially among trick-taking games, Little Devils is a big winner.
Pros:
Easy to learn
Quick to play
Easy to tailor to the time and group you have available
Offers great tension and interesting twists
The game keeps players engaged

Cons:
Game can be very dependent on luck
The "little devils" on the cards may be a turn-off depending on the audience
Game can feel samey if played too much in one sitting (this is more a caution than a con: take this game's small box seriously)
I'm terrible at it... (Just kidding--about this being a con, not about my being terrible at it.)

Who's not afraid of the fiscal cliff? - The Term ... - Fortune Finance

121012051821-cas29-fiscal-cliff-gallery-horizontalFORTUNE ? As Washington approaches judgment day over the fiscal cliff, the mix of tax hikes and spending cuts prompted CEOs from JPMorgan Chase's (JPM) Jamie Dimon to Honeywell's (HON) Dave Cote to march to Washington for a resolution. President Obama and lawmakers are fiercely politicking to keep the economy from tipping over the doomsday scenario of seeing Americans pay millions of dollars more in taxes next year.

But not everyone is freaking out about the edge of the fiscal cliff. Here are three sectors shrugging off ?fear -- for now, at least.

Homebuilders and rich buyers

Chances of higher taxes haven't ruined the draw of record-low interest rates. Just ask homebuilders and the relatively well-to-do homebuyers they've targeted.

Earlier this week, Toll Brothers (TOL), the largest U.S. luxury homebuilder, reported that revenues jumped 48% during the quarter ending on Oct. 31. Earnings rose $411.4 million or $2.35 per share, sharply higher from $15 million or 9 cents per share a year ago. To be sure, the bump included an income tax benefit of $350.7 million. Without it, earnings, at 35 cents per share, were still higher than a year ago.

CEO Douglas C. Yearley said a combination of higher home prices and low interest rates brought buyers back to the housing market in a big way this year.

This follows strong earnings reported by other major builders over the summer. Miami-based Lennar Corp. (LEN), the largest U.S. homebuilder by revenue, saw profits more than quadruple during the third quarter ended Aug. 31. And even thought first-time home buyers aren't purchasing homes as much as they once did, KB Home (KBH), the Los Angeles-based homebuilder that targets first-time buyers, reported an unexpected profit during the same period as sales climbed.

Consumers

With the way consumers have behaved, they either think President Obama and lawmakers will work out a deal before the country tips over the fiscal cliff, or they just aren't following the nation's fiscal problems.

While businesses hold off on spending, consumers seem less fazed. At least for now. In October, spending fell for the first time in five months by 0.2%, after a 0.8% gain the previous month, according to the Commerce Department. However, the drop had more to do with disruptions caused by Superstorm Sandy than worries over federal taxes and spending cuts. During the same month, consumer confidence surged to its highest level since before the recession, according to a survey by the University of Michigan.

And in December, consumer confidence continued to climb, rising to its highest level since February 2008.

MORE: Why the U.S. economy is trailing Mexico's

"Consumers are feeling good, housing is rebounding, and we remain confident that there'll be a resolution in Washington" on budget deficits, said Kurt McNeil, General Motors Co. vice president of sales operations, said during a teleconference on Monday.

To be sure, if Congress doesn't act by January, consumers will feel far differently. Probably not right away, but gradually as the average American family would see their tax bill go up $3,500 and their after-tax income drop 6.2%, The Tax Policy Center has estimated.

The services industry

And as consumers feel good about the economy, the U.S. services industry saw gains. In November, the Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing sector index rose to 54.7 from 54.2 in October. Readings above 50 usually means the sector, which includes utilities, health care, housing and finance, are expanding.

Economists had expected a decline, similar to a fall in the ISM factory index that showed manufacturing contracted during the same month. However, unlike manufacturing, services depend less on capital spending that has declined in the face of the fiscal cliff.

"The non-manufacturing sector is very diverse," Anthony Nieves, the ISM survey's chairman, told Bloomberg news. "Because it's made up of 18 industries with a slew of companies, small, medium and large, it's like having a diverse stock portfolio. You're not heavy in one particular sector or investment, so the overall effects or impacts from political uncertainty are not as immediate as you would see on the manufacturing side."
