Whether you choose to do your marketing online or offline, one thing that never changes. And this is the concept that any marketing strategy will be as effective as a combination of two or more marketing strategies.

If you are planning to combine multiple ways to advertise, you should be aware that this may make it difficult to assess the effectiveness of each marketing strategy. This is especially true when marketing strategies are carried out concurrently. Greg Smith has created a significant buzz on Wall Street. When he resigned on March 14th as an executive director at Goldman Sachs, one of the world?s largest investment banks, he decided to publish his resignation letter in the New York Times. Needless to say, he has definitely burned his bridges with his former employer. After 12 years at Goldman Sachs, which he writes was ?long enough to understand the trajectory of [the company?s] culture?, Smith claims he could no longer in good conscience identify with what the company stood for. He complains of a shift in the company?s practices from protecting client interests towards a culture of money-grubbing in which the client?s interests are sidelined. According to Smith, the mission today is to get clients to trade whatever brings the biggest profit to Goldman. He writes:

?Integrity? It is eroding. I don?t know of any illegal behavior, but will people push the envelope and pitch lucrative and complicated products to clients even if they are not the simplest investments or the ones most directly aligned with the client?s goals? Absolutely. Every day, in fact.?

Epson America now shipping Android-powered Moverio BT-100 wearable display

Epson America this morning announced that it's now shipping the Android-powered Moverio BT-100 wearable display. Yes. Android-powered grandma glasses. On your melon.

I got to take these guys for a spin last fall in January. They pretty much feel how you'd think they feel -- a bit bulky. Get over that, and having the equivalent of an 80-inch display projected in front of your peepers is a pretty cool, if not entirely practical, idea. 

With the glasses and earbuds over and in their respective orifices, you hold in your hand a controller (about the size of an old-school, original iPod) that connects to the glasses via a wire. The top half of the controller is a trackpad, for moving a cursor around the heads-up display. There are the usual Android buttons as well, and a directional-pad if that's how you prefer to navigate the menus. There's also a button to toggle between 2D and 3D modes.

So how'd it work? Look, it's a novelty, to be sure. But it's also one that was a bit surprising. It takes a minute to get used to the idea of video that close to your eyes. But even the 3D video we watched caused less strain than when we've tried it on smartphones. Another cool effect of the glasses is that you can remove the opaque lenses and actually see through the UI. Not that you're going to want to be walking and playing anytime soon, but the idea is that you lose some of the claustrophobia. The world is still the world.

The user interface we saw back in January October was very much in prototype mode, so it was a bit janky, a mix of stock Android and something custom. But it also was very familiar and easy to find our way around.

Do you want one of these? It's certainly a fun idea, but you're going to need to have some cash burning a hole in your pocket, as it's going for a suggested retail price of $699. But think of the possibilities. Temple Run. At 80 inches. Angry Birds IN YOUR FACE. Or, you know, (warning: Shameless plug ahead) the all new Android Central Forums app.

I have a firm and solid experience in facilitation subjects relating with Youth Development issues and have sound expertise in managing projects related with women and youth development. Since 2007, I have been working for the development of young people and women not only being as a volunteer but also as a program manager at NGO. Significantly, I founded Youth Education & Development Centre (YEDC) with my friends who want to make different our country by promoting quality education. In my opinion, young people are indispensible for nation?s development and it is very important for them to have adequate skills and knowledge. However, when I notice the situation of young people of Myanmar, I found that nearly 60% are unemployed and greater parts of them are being hopeless and helpless for their future. The system in Myanmar is highly decentralized which makes it difficult for young people to access the appropriate assistance to help them to receive training and support. There is a dire need for community-embedded organization to provide these services.
So, start form 2009, I concentrate my works on young people and women empowerment. I got an idea to establish Community Learning Center (CLC) that can support personal and societal development for Myanmar. The objective to establish CLC is by implementing that program, it has been one of the effective mechanisms for empowering individual and promoting community development in Yangon area. This program provides and open forum for young people to bridge their differences and develop cross-cultural, inter-faith relationships. Over and above, unlike with other community learning center my CLC provide training and resources to the women and youth groups who would otherwise not have the opportunity to do so. However, inadequate funding and lack of facilities led so many challenges to continue our work effectively and efficiently.
Among the challenges, we could do our best to curry on our movements and later we received some funding from American Embassy and Switzerland Embassy in 2011. Since then, we mainly focused our work in the following areas.
1.?Youth Space & Learning Market Place
I?ve got this idea when I participated in OIYP program that is to encourage youth to think differently and act differently for the community development. In Myanmar, we have to live under the rule of military regime that oppresses young people to think freely and critically. So, young people need a safe space to express their ideas and feelings: this is not widely encouraged in Myanmar for cultural and other reasons.? The Youth Space & Learning Market Place is open sessions and I arrange that session at least one time in a week. In the sessions, youth can reveal their ideas, though, feeling and requirement by words and letters. Under that activity youth have a safe space to reveal their innovative and creative ideas. Based on this space, I observe that which are the challenges for youth they currently facing and what kind of supports do they need by this experience, I organize monthly special talk programs which can give benefit for youth and that may leads a variety & plenty sources for learning opportunity.
2.?Cross Cultural Learning & Sharing
This is a unique program that provides and open forum for young people to bridge their differences and develop cross-cultural, inter-faith relationships.? In each program 15 participants form different Community Based organization (CBO) and students who are interested in the program participate and contribute their live experience and practical exercises. In the workshops, the participants will have a chance to present brief information of their organizations and why they are standing for. Youth from different groups and religious background would share their cultural belief, norms and their differences in order to build mutual trust and understanding among the groups.
3.?Library & Resource

I could establish a mini library as well community resource center. In the library, it has 350 books and more than 1,000 E-books. However, there is still need to add more resources to broaden learning opportunities for those young people accessing my program.
4.?Educational and Vocational Training
?In the Community Learning Center, we provide necessary training to youth but also for women who have only limited opportunities to access trainings and development. Every month, I arrange educational training and vocational training. For Educational training, I conducted the topic which is important for youth and current global issues such as Globalization, Time management, Leadership and Communication Skills, Personal Development and Health & Hygiene.? By those trainings, youth can realize themselves and start to think their individual development which is very important foundation for community development. These trainings help youth to live in better quality of life and youth will be developed capacities and self-confident. Vocational training is one of the most important activities for the livelihood of women and young people who has inadequate abilities to get good jobs and sustain by them. By through this training, women learnt about making Myanmar traditional foods, making fancy wears and bags and shaping fruits. So, after the training, they gained vocational skills and based on these new receiving skills they can make money for their better living.

In August 2010, I started to work with SMILE EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION as a program manager as a paid job. Before this I used to work as a volunteer for small CBOs and I am still working as volunteer program manager for YEDC up to now. Working with Smile Education gave me a chance to participate in pro-democracy movements for political transition in Myanmar from Military junta to disciplined democracy. With Smile Education, I actively participated in the following movements.
Building Advocacy Networks
Nowadays, our country is a young democracy, in which strengthening of all the organs that may ensure democracy, is necessary. In democratic systems, the role of civil society organizations has traditionally been strong in interceding on behalf of their members, and also in monitoring the exercise of power, The CSOs are representing the people in large, and very often especially those, who are the most vulnerable. However, according to the government restrictions and some other challenges; civil society organizations are not as much as healthy and cannot be strengthen out their activities as they should.
?To fulfill the above need, I implement a project which envisages enhancing institutional capacities in terms of facilitating the organizations for preparing their organizations? operating procedures for effective delivery of their programs as well as setting strategic directions.? Under that project, I publish and distribute monthly newsletter for having linkages among CSOs and youth communities by introducing opportunities and available resources to uplift their status. Providing a networking space for CSOs to work together and connect with other social activists lead to develop cohesive collectives which can develop projects and work towards united goals. I arrange monthly networking meeting for member groups and launch joint-venture social activities for more effectiveness and efficiency of development activities. These workshop sessions carried out as combination of groups? presentations, special talks of ?live experiences and best practices? by the prominent social activist and brainstorming of how shall we overcome those challenges and issues.
Capacities Building for CSO
?Nowadays, the main problem of Myanmar CSO are, being activist centered voluntary organizations in nature these organizations lack organizational discipline and project management skills; which becomes a pre-requisite for these organizations when aspiring to work with INGOs and donors. This has not only limited the ability of these organizations to mobilize resources for their respective organizational projects but also donors trust on the capabilities of these organization. Furthermore, although there are so many civil society organizations in Myanmar, but, most of them are in the service providing level and do not attempts the true representative for their respective community to advocate for the policy changing. So that the voice from the people cannot be reached to the government policy making groups through the civil society as they are not playing the role that they should be.
?Civil societies and opponent political parties themselves are weak in good governance, transparency, accountability and sustainability. So that they cannot mobilize people power to bring change for a good transition to genuine democracy. There is an urgent need to capacitate political parties; admittedly ethnic parties are advanced; there is a need for civil society to identify allies ? the need to focus on individuals and leaders who can be molded to support people?s agenda for change.
?For the above issues, I implement a project for to enhance meaningful participation of people in democratization process and strengthening local civil society organizations for the development of communities. For that project, I conducted the Citizenship Awareness training not only in Yangon, but also in upper Myanmar and the targeted areas are Mandalay Division, Sagine Division and Shan State. I arrange training for Civil Society in those area and I also take parts as a trainer for the subject such as Project Cycle Management, Development Concept, Leadership Skills, Facilitation Skills, Personal Development and Community Mobilization.
?After the training, participants from targeted area had to go back to their respective area and shared the knowledge and skills that they gain from the training. They had to write proposal and do project and I had to manage, supervise for their sustainability and arrange to give small grant to some organizations. By doing so, we could broaden our network and establish small groups.

Epson LabelWorks LW-300 Label Printer

The Epson LabelWorks LW-300 Label Printer ($39.99 direct) is the lower priced of two similar standalone label printers that Epson recently introduced, offering most of the features of the Epson LabelWorks LW-400 ($49.99 direct, 3.5 stars) for $10 less. This battery-powered machine performs basic label printing, offering various fonts, type styles, and a wide variety of symbols. It?s highly portable and operates totally PC free.

The Basics

The LW-300 has a white base, matte-black top, and rounded corners. On top is a QWERTY keyboard, about 5 inches wide; a 4-way controller; a 1-line LED display; ?and about a dozen function buttons related to creating labels. To the left of the display is an On/Off button; to the screen?s right is the Print button, its importance underscored by the fact that it?s one of only 2 green buttons. The other, on the printer?s right side, lets you snip the completed label.

The printer measures 2.2 by 5.9 by 5.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.2 pounds. Although it?s wider than a normal hand?s width, an indentation on the bottom doubles as a finger grip; I had no trouble holding the printer in one hand and typing with the other.

As is the case with the Epson LW-400, the LW300 is a totally standalone label printer; there?s no way to hook it to a PC if you wanted to. The upside of that is you can print labels anywhere you can carry this ultraportable device. The downside is you?re consigned to using the small QWERTY keyboard to create your labels.

Even using two hands with the printer resting on a table, typing for me on the LW-300?s keyboard was strictly hunt and peck. The keyboard is nearly an inch wider than the one on the LW-400, but I still wasn?t able to accurately touch type with it. The Editors? Choice Brother P-touch PT-2730 ?($100 street, 4 stars) operates either standalone or connected to a computer, as does the Dymo LabelManager 420P ?($110 street, 4 stars), though the Dymo?s own keyboard is alphabetically arranged rather than QWERTY.

The printer is powered by six AAA batteries. Should you forget to turn the LW-300 off, it will shut itself off after five minutes. The bottom can be easily opened to replace batteries or the tape cartridge. An optional AC adapter is available for $25 (direct).

Epson offers 25 different label cartridges, up to a half-inch wide, for the LW-300, including standard, strong adhesive, clear, glow-in-the-dark, iron-on (fabric), metallic, and pearlized, in several different type and background colors. The Epson LW-400, for which Epson offers 41 cartridges up to ? inch wide, supports the printing of specialty labels such as barcodes, double-sided tabs, wire wraps, and flags. Both the Brother P-touch PT-2730 and the Dymo LabelManager 420P support printing of three-fourths-of-an-inch labels.

Inserting a label cartridge is literally a snap. Once you remove the printer?s bottom cover, you just snap the cartridge into place, making sure that any excess tape is fed through the two guides.

Label Making

Creating labels is straightforward enough, though it takes time to get used to the function keys and I found myself constantly referring to the instructions. One function key toggles between upper and lower case; one sets type size (you can have either one or two lines of text on the label); one lets you choose the font and another, the type style (bold, italic, outline, etc.). One function key lets you add punctuation; another, symbols; and yet another, accents.

A Setup button performs various functions, among them specifying label length; adjusting space between characters; chaning the font width, creating vertical text, and creating mirror-image text. A preview button scrolls through the text you?ve entered and lets you know label length.

There is a learning curve in mastering label making with the LW-300, and you don?t want to lose the instructions, but in time it gets easier and quicker.

The LW-300 took 11.6 seconds to print a 2.8-inch label reading This is a test and 19 seconds for a 4.9-inch label reading PCMag: Printer Speed Test, essentially the same speed as the LW-400. The Brother P-touch PT-2730 took 11.6 seconds to print a 3.5-inch-long label, also reading PCMag: Printer Speed Test, while the Dymo LabelManager 420p ($110 street, 4 stars), printed the same text in just 6.5 seconds.?

If you don?t plan on printing barcodes, wide labels, or labels for cabling, the Epson LabelWorks LW-300 Label Printer offers most of what the LW-400 does, for less. Although there?s some learning curve, it?s easy enough to use, highly portable, and its wider keyboard is slightly easier to type on than the LW-400?s. The Brother P-touch PT-2730 and the Dymo LabelManager 420p let you create labels either as a standalone device or from a computer keyboard, but both cost more than twice as much as the LW-300.?

Proteins turned on by opium and similar substances in the body have now been caught in action. Two new snapshots show how cellular proteins lasso molecules in the opium family, revealing the 3-D structure of such pairings for the first time.?

The work represents a major step toward designing more specific analgesics and other drugs that lack opioids? nasty side effects, two teams of researchers report online March 21 in Nature.

?Both are landmark studies,? says Gavril Pasternak, a neuroscientist who designs opioids at the Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York City, and who wasn?t involved in either study. ?These structures will quickly be utilized with goal of developing nonaddicting painkillers and new ways to combat drug abuse.?

Proteins that respond to opium and opiumlike molecules protrude from the surfaces of cells throughout the brain, spinal cord and gut. The body?s own hormones and brain chemicals such as endorphins can bind to these proteins to turn the molecular switches on and off to control pain, regulate breathing and change mood.

Many of today?s most powerful painkillers work by switching on one of these proteins, called the mu opioid receptor. But the relief this provides comes at a price. Derivatives of opium, such as morphine and codeine, are addictive and can cause breathing problems and constipation.

To better understand how these drugs work, an international team of researchers for the first time crystallized a small morphinelike molecule attached to a mu receptor ? a technically difficult task that requires isolating the pair of molecules without unsticking them from each other. X-rays revealed how one molecule lined up with the other.?

This structure ?may prove to be important in understanding why some opioids are more addictive than others,? says S?bastien Granier, a molecular biologist at Stanford University and a coauthor on the mu receptor paper. Although the small molecule his team tested has the opposite effect of morphine ? it deactivates the mu receptor ? knowing how the molecule docks should help improve computer simulations of various drugs that can turn the protein on or off.

In the second study, Seva Katritch of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., and colleagues looked in detail at how the experimental drug JDTic sticks to a kappa opioid receptor ? a switch that?s turned on by the plant-derived hallucinogen Salvinorin A. ?Kappa opioid receptors are especially interesting because of their emerging distinct role in regulation of stress,? says Katritch. JDTic, which flips the switch off, is being tested as a treatment for drug abuse.

Each team?s test molecule latched on to its receptor at multiple points in the revealed structures. Small differences in the attachment sites may help to explain why some molecules are more promiscuous than others. Designing new drugs that bind only with specific receptors could help to cut down on side effects.

?Everyone in the field has been waiting to see these crystal structures,? says Jane Aldrich, a medicinal chemist at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. ?Now we can look at how particular parts of the molecules interact.?

The receptor pockets that grabbed ahold of the molecules also proved to be surprisingly large and open. This extra space should give drug designers a bit of wiggle room ? and the flexibility to tack on extra atoms to drugs like morphine in the hopes of making them less problematic.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) is a disease that is mainly passed from one person to another through sexual intercourse. Also referred to as venereal disease (VD), this illness has a significant probability of transmission between humans by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. While Sexually transmitted disease and Venereal Disease have been used widely in the past, they are now commonly referred to as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), bringing a broader scope to the issue; as it is possible for a person to be infected and to spread the infections to other people, without having a disease in any way. An example of this is Chlamydia, which infects a person without causing any particular disease; giving only unpleasant symptoms. Some sexually transmitted infections can also be spread through breastfeeding and childbirth, and also by the use of IV drug needles that have been used by a person infected.

Awareness of any STD can arise from the discovery of symptoms. Also, if sexual intercourse has been had with a person that lets you know he/she has a sexually transmitted disease/infection, there is also the probability that you might be affected. It also worth noting that there is the possibility of someone transmitting an infection to another person without any visible symptoms on the infected. There are some infections that can also be transferred from a mother to an unborn child.

There are about 25 different sexually transmitted diseases with different symptoms attributed to each disease. In order to better know the symptoms, categorization of the sexually transmitted infections according to cause is required.

In the cases of STDs caused by bacteria like Gonorrhea, symptoms include painful urination and discharge from vagina/penis. However, about 50% of women show no symptoms but can still pass it on to others. Chlamydia symptoms include discharge from vagina/penis with a burning sensation during urination. Symptoms of Syphilis usually include a rash, headache, fever and achy joints (not necessarily together). It usually starts a painless genital ulcer that goes away on its own. The symptoms of Syphilis however are usually mild. Chancroid symptoms include painful genital ulcers, and it can often be confused with syphilis or herpes. It should be noted that STDs caused by bacteria are treatable with antibiotics.

With STDs caused by viruses like Herpes, the most common symptoms are blister-like sores that occur over and over around the genital area. Herpes can be transmitted from a mother to her unborn child. Genital warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), have symptoms that include small painless bumps around the genital or anal areas, which might also be in large clusters. In the case of HIV/AIDS there are no physical signs or symptoms that show one has the virus. However, illnesses such as night sweats, chills, long lasting fevers, headaches and cough could occur several weeks after the virus has been contracted. There is no cure currently. However there are medications available to slow down the progression of the disease.
