Women in Wine - The London Pub
Recently I decided to conquer a great fear in my very storied and bizarre life ? the dreaded Wine List. As a fashion designer, writer, and man about town I?m very fortunate to be invited to fancy and swanky restaurants, soirees and events. Therefore to put it plainly, I spend a fair amount of time inhaling great food and swigging fine wine. I know ? don?t cry for me Argentina. However, not until recently did I truly realize I wasn?t fully appreciating the art, process and tradition of fine dining and particularly, the crafstmanship of great wine. But all of this about to change ? and when Mister GoLightly decides to make a change, he brings everyone along for the ride.
The first thing I knew I would need to begin my transformation from vino novice to wine connoisseur was a team of experts. Yes experts, as I plan on taking my wine consumption very seriously from this point forward. Therefore I will require a trio of professionals to guide me in the right direction. So I decided to seek assistance from the people closest to me. I telephoned, emailed, and met with almost every person I knew that had anything to do with the wine business. However, what I found a little strange was that most of the people I knew in the wine biz were all men. While most of the men I spoke with were all very passionate and educated about wine, there was just something about their approach that didn?t quite fit with what I was trying to get at in my quest. I really wanted to know more about the sense of reverence that seems to surround the art of wine tasting and making. In essence, I really wanted to be educated on the beauty, charm and creativity of fine wine. Somehow, this got me to wondering, ?Are there many women in the wine business?? I didn?t have very long to ponder the question as it was magically answered one fateful afternoon while having lunch at the Four Seasons in New York City. I started yammering on and on about my need to connect to people in the wine business when a dear friend said to me, ?You should meet one of the owner?s daughter, Keiko. She knows all about wine.?
BEAUTY: The strikingly gorgeous and modelesque Keiko Niccolini was born into the charmed world of restaurants and fine dining ? the venerable Four Seasons Restaurant to be exact. Legend has it that Keiko could filet a Dover sole and saber a bottle of champagne before she could ride a bike. As a young girl she could be found on any given day running through the hallowed halls of the family business. However, as an adult she now travels the world in search of new dishes and wines to bring to the tables of the Four Season as well as her wine consulting firm AMEDEO. Keiko as you can imagine, was destined for a life in food and wine.
And now, Keiko Niccolini has agreed to be my guru, my personal guide as I embark on a mysterious journey into and beyond Wine Tasting 101.
Under Ms. Niccolini?s tutelage and through the course of our adventures, I am hoping to come out on the other end a lot more knowledgeable and a little less afraid of sampling and experiencing new wines and spirits. It is also my desire to finally retire my catch phrase when it comes to choosing or drinking wine, ?It doesn?t matter what I drink ? I only drink to get drunk.? Which is only partly true. Who cares if every time I repeat it Keiko reacts as if someone has taken their well manicured fingernails and scratched them down a freshly wiped chalkboard. Well I care ? and hopefully somewhere along the way, this juvenile retort will be retired and replaced with language that describes delicious wine with the respect and grace it rightfully deserves.
Needless to say, Keiko and I have become fast friends. Recently after attending a not-so-fabulous and actually quite boring soiree, she thought that it would be the perfect time for a surprise crash course in wine tasting ? total emergence in wine culture. So she decided to introduce me to a real-life Master Sommelier, Ms. Laura Maniec.
CHARM: Laura Maniec is a Native New Yorker and the charismatic owner of Corkbuzz Wine Studio. During the course of our evening I learned that Laura actually discovered her true enthusiasm for wine through an 18-week sommelier certification class at Windows of the World. It was through this experience that she was inspired, motivated and excited to pursue a career in wine.
A girl after my own heart, just as Laura was legally able to drink she became a sommelier at Blue Fin in New York City. Progressing quickly, she was made a partner as well as wine and spirits director for the entire B.R. Guest Restaurant Group of 20 restaurants across the country. At only 25 years old, she was managing the wine list as well as educating the entire front-of-house team on wine.
It turns out the charming and personable Ms. Maniec earned her Master Sommelier designation in 2009 and is currently the youngest in the world. Not to mention she is one of only 18 women to have achieved this highest accreditation given to wine professionals. And on this night she too agreed to join the team and proceeded to give me a VIP guided tour through their intense and intimidating wine list. But for the first time in being presented a normally daunting wine list, I wasn?t afraid. I was almost downright giddy. What did I have to fear? I was now armed with not only a wine guru but also a master sommelier. Take that 33- or 72-page wine list! Okay, in all honesty, I may be exaggerating the personal attention given just to me by our master sommelier. You see Laura seems to possess the uncanny ability to give everyone that enters the doors of CorkBuzz the same level of attention and graciousness ? an ability rarely found in New York City eateries these days.
To attempt description of the champagnes, reds, whites and ros?s that danced and dazzled in my mouth on this evening would do CorkBuzz and Ms. Maniec a grave injustice. I don?t possess the eloquence to characterize the pas de deux that took place between the exquisite wine list and the culinary masterpieces prepared by their Executive Chef, Hayan Yi. I don?t dare attempt to formulate adequate prose to depict the near religious experience that visitors share in this tastefully decorated restaurant and wine bar. To try and fail would be borderline blasphemy. However after almost closing down the joint accompanied by a magnificent high that had no resemblance at all to being drunk, I felt as if I had to rush home and immediately repent, ?Our Mother, Full of Grace??
Which brings me to the most recent introduction to form my dream team, my trilogy, my Three Graces?
For several weeks during our tastings and outings, Keiko kept saying to me, ?You have to meet my mentor in all things wine. You will love her.? I will admit, in my experience whenever someone says to me ?You will love him or her,? this has rarely ever been the case. But this was coming from my guru ? my liege, and she hadn?t steered me wrong thus far. So off I went the other afternoon, in the pouring New York City rain, to The Modern restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art to meet Ms. Joy Sterling.
CREATIVITY: The inventive and visionary Joy Sterling represents the second generation of wine making at Iron Horse Vineyards. She is the CEO of the winery and the author of four books on the art of wine. Although she was born in America, Joy grew up in Paris, attended a French school, and speaks fluent French. Living in Europe and traveling extensively, Ms. Sterling received an extraordinary education in the appreciation of food and wine as well as a love of quality wherever it is found in the world.
Joy returned to the United States to attend Yale University where she studied history and economics. After her studies she went into journalism, first for United Press International, followed by local television, and ultimately, network TV news. At the age of 29, Joy was Deputy Bureau Chief for ABC Network News in Los Angeles. She was given numerous special assignments including coverage of the first Space Shuttle landings in California, coordinating producer for several Presidential trips, and the high point of her career, Assignment Editor for ABC?s 1984 Olympic coverage.
In 1985, Joy left ABC?s hierarchy to join her family?s business. Thus, a new sort of woman was recruited into California?s wine industry. Significantly, she made news headlines for the winery with her first achievement at Iron Horse. In November, 1985, the White House selected Iron Horse Sparkling Wine for the President?s toast to peace at the first summit meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva.
Joy quietly took up the reins at Iron Horse at the start of 2006, having spent 20 years traveling on behalf of the winery, personally introducing the wines to an impressive list of customers from Spago in Beverly Hills to the Four Seasons in New York.
She is an adventurer, having climbed Kilimanjaro, run white water rapids on the Bio-Bio River in Chile and the upper reaches of the Yank Sing River in China, trekked in Tibet and Bhutan, and completed a road trip to Timbuktu.
Joy joined the prestigious Board of Trustees of The Leakey Foundation in 2007. One of her major initiatives is hosting an annual fundraising and awareness raising event in partnership with National Geographic celebrating Earth Day held at Iron Horse.
Now I ask you ? What is there not to love about Joy a.k.a. @JoyBubbles? From the moment we made eye contact as I shuffled in from the pouring rain, looking more disheveled like Ms. GoLightly?s wet cat than the intended flawlessness of Holly off to visit Sally Tomato at Sing-Sing, I innately knew that I would be captivated and bewitched by the accomplished Joy Sterling.
Joy is earth-mother, rainmaker and wine whisperer wrapped into one stylish, hot-mama of a package. Did I mention she was also wearing a navy vintage Dior dress? I almost died and went to heaven at the sight of this magnificent being. The one thing you quickly learn about Joy within five minutes of being in her presence is that she is filled with love, life and passion. As we shared a bottle of her world famous Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee I found out that she is also a hugger, a great thinker, a visionary, a powerhouse, and just an awesome down-to-earth gal.
During the entire afternoon my eyes kept darting from Keiko to Joy, my mind was racing, but my mouth couldn?t keep up with all the thoughts bursting through my brain. I must have come across as a complete crazy person but what I couldn?t explain to either of these incredible women was how I was finally beginning to understand it all. How I understood there was more than just wine they had in common. How I could see the ancestral sisterhood, the kinship, an indigo hued spiritual camaraderie void of competition or pettiness. But mostly, I was in complete and utter awe. I found myself in an absolute state of humbled gratitude. Grateful that I had been allowed to bare witness to their sublime and noble grace.
As I finally sat down to write this piece, I couldn?t believe that in only a few short weeks I had already begun to develop a true appreciation for wines produced in Napa Valley as well as grapes grown in the Vittoria region of Sicily. I discovered that my preference for all things ?pink and bubbly? had very little to do with my flamboyance and sexual orientation and much more to do with the various techniques and processes utilized to achieve just the right shade, smell and taste of Ros?. And while I am still at the very beginning stages of my wine adventures, I doubt very seriously if I will be drinking with the goal of getting drunk in mind (wink-wink). Instead, I envision buckling up and bracing myself for the long and meandering roads of wine country under the watchful gaze, generosity and guidance of my divine Three Graces.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management recently played host to a panel of engineers and scientists from automakers, suppliers and academia for "The Autonomous Vehicle - 2012," and Ford brought Chris Hamilton, designer of the 2013 Ford Fusion, to accept the New England Motor Press Gene Ritvo award for Design and Elegance. That gave Autoblog an opportunity to corner Mr. Hamilton for five minutes and chat about what's possibly the most hotly-anticipated mainstream sedan in a generation. As Edwards jury deliberates, how long is too long?
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? With the jury at the John Edwards trial set to begin deliberations for a seventh day on Tuesday, speculation grows that the 12 people charged with deciding the fate of the former presidential candidate may be deadlocked.
Edwards faces six felony charges in a case involving nearly $1 million provided by two wealthy political donors to help hide the Democrat's pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.
To determine Edwards' guilt or innocence, the jury must sift through notes from 17 days of testimony and review about 500 trial exhibits, many of them voluminous phone and financial records. They must not only determine whether the candidate knew about the secret payments, which he has denied, but whether he realized he was violating federal law by allowing them.
That requires the jury to navigate a web of laws so complicated that even campaign finance experts disagree on whether the money used in the cover-up qualify as political contributions, which were then limited to $2,300 per person. Although U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles said the issue appeared straightforward to her, the jury instructions took nearly an hour to read and left many on the jury looking dazed.
"This is a pretty complex chore," said Kieran J. Shanahan, a former federal prosecutor turned defense attorney who has attended nearly every day of the trial. "There's a lot to digest and come to an agreement on. One full week of deliberations is nothing to hit the panic button on. But if it goes another week, that indicates the likelihood of a split verdict or hung jury."
Federal law defines campaign contributions as money given with the intent of influencing the outcome of an election. But neither of the donors who gave the money testified about their thinking on the issue.
Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, a 101-year-old heiress, was deemed too frail to travel to court. Those involved in the scheme said she had no idea much of the $725,000 she funneled to an Edwards aide for a "personal expense" was being spent on concealing an extramarital affair.
Fred Baron, a wealthy Texas lawyer who served as Edwards' campaign finance chairman, paid for flights on private jets, luxury hotel rooms and a $20,000 rental mansion in California. He died of bone cancer in late 2008.
Edwards, a former trial lawyer, decided not to take the stand in his own defense. His mistress, Rielle Hunter, was not called to testify.
The jurors deliberate in a windowless conference room, their privacy protected by U.S. Marshals. Their lunch is catered inside.
The group of eight men and four women mostly come from middle-class backgrounds, including a retired fireman, a special education teacher, a plumber, a retired railroad engineer and two mechanics. There are also jurors with strong financial acumen, including a corporate vice president and a retired accountant.
High-profile juries that acquitted a defendant usually did so quickly.
It took less than a day last year for Florida jurors to find Casey Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. That was after 33 days of testimony, 400 pieces of evidence and 90 witnesses.
The jury that acquitted football star O.J. Simpson of his former wife, Nicole, and her friend Ronald Goldman, made their decision in less than four hours.
And while it is true deliberations lasting several days or even weeks often end in deadlocks, there are examples where juries took a long time to return a guilty verdict.
The jury at the first trial of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich deliberated 14 days before a mistrial was declared on 23 corruption counts, though they did convict him on one count of making false statements.
Undeterred, federal prosecutors tried Blagojevich again. During his second trial, it took jurors 10 days to convict him on 17 counts of corruption.
The judge at Edwards' trial abruptly closed the courtroom Friday to talk to attorneys about an issue with a juror. She reopened the courtroom after 35 minutes, giving the public no details about what the problem was before sending everyone home for the long holiday weekend.
The jury's behavior drew attention Thursday when the four alternates all wore canary-yellow shirts. On Friday, they all wore bright red shirts, as did two of the 12 jurors deliberating the case.
One of the alternates, a young woman, has also frequently exchanged smiles with Edwards and nodded enthusiastically during closing arguments last week as the former presidential candidate's lawyer urged them to find his client not guilty.
Eagles can dismiss an alternate juror without affecting the trial. But if she dismisses one of the 12 deliberating the case and an alternate takes over, the discussions would have to start all over.
The judge said she would start court early Tuesday to talk about the issue further.
Steve Friedland, a former federal prosecutor and professor at Elon University School of Law, said those waiting for resolution should remain patient.
"Jury verdicts are not always like fast food, delivered neatly wrapped in short order," he said. "Instead, verdicts are sometimes like a fine meal that takes a long time to prepare. That is what is occurring in the Edwards case, and the result may be all the better for it."

When you are planning your custom home with your architect or draftsmen remember that it costs money to have the nice things in life.
More and more clients or perspective clients come to me and say they are shocked at some of the prices that contractors have given them on their custom home project. Since the recession, I have found that perspective clients came to us (general contractors) under the impression that custom homes and all there luxuries had gotten cheaper. It?s not true; actually the price for custom homes has risen since the recession started. There are a couple of things that have attributed to this;
- ?? ? ??Taxes. Taxes have changed in the province of Ontario, with the HST coming in we now are charging tax on all parts of the house. This has driven the cost of custom homes up by thousands of dollars by itself.
- ?? ? ? ? Material. The raw material for custom homes has gone up since the recession. When the crash of 2008 happened a lot of the businesses that supplied material to the construction industry either downsized or went out of business. This drove the price of raw goods up instead of down. With less competition and less product on the market then the price of products always goes up.
- ????????? Construction Industry itself. The industry is under a recession only in some parts of the province. In a lot of places the industry has maintained itself or has even grown. Even though there are more contractors looking to build houses, there seems to be more houses to build.
- ????????? Baby boomer generation. With the large baby boomer generation reaching retirement age, it has created its own bubble of growth that is fueling the construction economy. This boomer generation is the largest and wealthiest group of people to ever reach retirement age and is generating endless jobs in the construction industry in certain parts of the province.
- ????????? Clients asking for more service. The boomer generation wants service and not just someone to build them a house. Companies are increasing their office staff to keep up with client demand for personnel service. As you increase staff so goes your overhead, as your overhead increases so do the cost of doing business. Contractors now are hiring interior designers to help their clients work through the endless options that you can find in stores and on the internet. You used to just hand a client a bill, now they are asking for a breakdown of bills to understand where the money goes and were they are with payment of the hold backs. More time now has to be spent with face time with clients and answering their emails and phone calls.
- ????????? Building code changes. The building code in Ontario has gone through a radical change this year. Energy efficiency which was an option for people that wanted to pay the higher price is now part of the building code. This has drove the price of custom homes up, with home owners being told they have to have more insulation installed throughout the home, higher efficiency furnaces installed and HRV?s as a standard piece of equipment. It is a good thing that the province is working toward more efficient home, but it raises the cost of your home when you build it.
- ????????? Wsib premiums and insurance costs have risen. Insurance for general contractors, the building of the home and WSIB premiums have all been rising every year. This means that the cost of doing business is ever increasing.
- ????????? Modern convinces. With the explosion of technology to run your home with computer software growing every year it has forced contractors to install a lot of extra wiring for electrical and structured wiring for audio, video, automation and internet. With in-ceiling speakers, audio controls on the walls and home theatres the costs keep going up. Multi headed showers, steam showers, heated floors, residential elevators, dog showers, automatic lighting, LED lighting and many more convinces that never existed before are driving the price per square foot through the roof.
- ????????? Internet and TV exposure. With the use of the internet and home shows on television showing you the latest and greatest things in homes, people are exposed to things that they never would have thought that they needed before. So the more things that you want in your home the more it will cost to build it. It used to be that your selection was limited to what your architect or builder had used before, now the possibilities are endless.
- ????????? Being Green. With everyone thinking about the environment especially when they are constructing their new home, home owners are now actively looking for better options then the traditional ones. This is a wonderful trend that is well over due in home building. The only problem is that being green tends to cost the green. Products that are usually green tend to be a higher end product and last a lot longer, with this comes an increased price tag. It also usually means that there are less suppliers of the product which also allows them to keep the price tag higher.
- ????????? What used to be luxury is now the norm. Granite counter tops were always a luxury that you found in high end kitchens. Now all kitchens in new homes are granite and almost all bathrooms have granite tops for their vanities. Vinyl floors used to be the norm for a lot of bathrooms and laundry rooms. Now it is tile with heated floors underneath.
Like everything in life if you want the finer things in life they come with a price. You would be surprised, maybe even shocked on how little general contractors actually make on building a custom home. If you do your research before asking a contractor for a budget you will be able to avoid sticker shock. Just remember that the more things you want in your house the more it will cost in the end.
When you are planning the budget for your custom home try this simple little routine. Make a list of all the things you want in the house, no matter what it is and how much you think it will cost put it on the list. Then break down the list so that you have several columns for example;

If you make a list like this then you should be able to help design your budget and get the most value out of your custom built home. This will also allow your general contractor to give you a price on your custom home that is broken down.

Ted Stevens Case: Justice Department Says Two Prosecutors Engaged In Misconduct
WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department's internal ethics watchdog said Thursday that two prosecutors in the bungled corruption case against then-Sen. Ted Stevens engaged in reckless professional misconduct by failing to disclose information favorable to the lawmaker, who eight days after his 2008 conviction lost re-election to the seat he held for 40 years.
The Office of Professional Responsibility, however, did not find that the misconduct was intentional.
A career Justice Department official decided one prosecutor should be suspended for 40 days without pay and the second prosecutor should be suspended for 15 days without pay. They can appeal to the independent Merit Systems Protection Board.
The office found no professional misconduct by other prosecutors in the Stevens case.
A jury convicted Stevens on Oct. 27, 2008, of seven felony counts of lying on Senate financial disclosure documents to hide hundreds of thousands of dollars in home renovations and gifts from wealthy friends. Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate at the time, was defeated eight days later by Democrat Mark Begich.
The judge in the case dismissed Stevens' conviction in April 2009 after the Justice Department admitted misconduct. Stevens died in a plane crash on Aug. 9, 2010.
In March, a court-appointed special prosecutor declined to recommend criminal contempt charges over government misconduct in the case.
The government's star witness in the Stevens prosecution, Bill Allen, testified that he oversaw extensive renovations at Stevens' home and sent his employees to work on it. Allen is the millionaire founder of VECO Corp., an Alaska company that provided support for oil producers. Stevens' defense was that the senator and his wife understood that VECO's costs for its employees' work on the renovation were included in the bills the senator received.
The OPR said in a report that Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Bottini failed to provide Stevens' lawyers with information from Allen that was inconsistent with Allen's later interviews and trial testimony.
In addition, the report also said Bottini failed to disclose information in an FBI interview summary and an Internal Revenue Service interview memo regarding Stevens' willingness to pay bills that VECO might have provided. Bottini also was found to have failed to disclose information from a construction supervisor who said he thought that VECO's costs would be added to the invoices sent to Stevens for payment.
The report found that Assistant U.S. Attorney James Goeke failed to disclose the information about the construction supervisor.
Bottini is a federal prosecutor in Alaska, and Goeke is a prosecutor in the Eastern District of Washington state. Calls to Bottini and Goeke were not immediately returned Thursday.
Since the Stevens debacle ended in April 2009, the Justice Department has devoted substantial time and attention to training prosecutors and federal agents about their obligations to turn over evidence favorable to a defendant.
Regardless of experience, 6,000 federal criminal prosecutors go through two hours of discovery training each year. Last year, the Justice Department provided discovery training to more than 26,000 federal law enforcement agents and other officials, mainly from the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The Justice Department says a legislative remedy is unnecessary.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, has introduced the Fairness in Disclosure of Evidence Act, which would require early disclosure of evidence favorable to the defense. The legislation requires disclosure of such evidence without delay after arraignment. Evidence favorable to the defense that is uncovered later in the case must be turned over as soon as reasonably practicable.
Murkowski's legislation also would require prosecutors to disclose material that reasonably appears to be favorable to the defendant. That addresses the practice by prosecutors of disclosing favorable evidence only if it is deemed material to the guilt or innocence of a defendant.
