Sandy Grounds Thousands of Flights but Analysts ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook

Thousands of airline flights to and from the east coast of the United States have been grounded as a result of Hurricane Sandy, which threatens to be one of the worst ever to hit the East Coast.

JetBlue Airways, which has a major hub at Kennedy Airport in Queens, New York, has canceled more than 1,000 flights from Sunday through Wednesday, and United Airlines, with a major hub in Newark, New Jersey, has grounded 3,700 flights, or about 16% of those scheduled, during that same period.

American Airlines and its commuter line American Eagle have canceled over 1,500 flights from Sunday night until midday Wednesday and says there may be additional delays and cancellations depending on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Customers whose flights were canceled but bought their tickets before October 27 won't be charged extra if they reschedule to travel no later than Nov. 7.

Delta and all other airlines with flights scheduled to depart or leave airports along the East Coast have also canceled flights.

Analysts don't expect the storm to have a lasting impact on airlines, however, fourth quarter earnings could feel a pinch.

"We do not expect the storm to have a sustained impact on earnings, through there is likely to be a shortfall from current 4Q12 estimates," Raymond Kames analyst Savanthi Syth writes in her report today.

"The airlines are well prepared?.They've moved their assets out of harm's way," says Ray Neidl, senior equity analyst at Maxim Group.

Neidl says those moves, flying planes to airports out of the storm's path, will be the biggest storm-induced cost for the airlines.

Additionally, losses could be limited due to the fact that the storm is coming at a "soft time" in the season.

Mateo Lleras, manager of corporate communications at JetBlue, says the airline is not yet in a position to discuss the financial impact of the storm but tells The Daily Ticker "it's worth noting that while planes don't make money on the ground, they don't cost money, either?we save on fuel and other operating costs."

If customers want to change or cancel flights, JetBlue is waving fees for travel to and from cities in the mid-Atlantic and northwest that are impacted by the storm.

According to Syth, JetBlue is among the airlines most affected by the storm, followed by United, Delta, US Airways and American. She estimates the storm could cost JetBlue $25 million pre-tax. More than 80% of its flights are along the East Coast Corridor from Washington, D.C. to Rhode Island?compared to about 48% for US Airways and between 22-28% for other major airlines. She estimates Delta will lose $45 million pre-tax.

Overall Syth says the airline industry is now much better prepared to weather big storms because they're "very disciplined about managing capacity?.They're not going after market share for the sake of market share, but add only flights that make economic sense."

The full impact of Hurricane Sandy on the airlines won't be known for days.

"If the worst of the storm is by Tuesday and things start to recover Wednesday, then planes could be operational by the weekend," says Neidl.

Stay tuned.

Cloud-Based Telephony Can Provide Valuable Business Continuity

No one expects a hurricane to hit business. Superstorm Sandy?formerly Hurricane Sandy?has provided the same bit of unexpected terror for a lot of businesses in New York and the New England area. It?s times like these that having remote operations capability becomes all the more important, and cloud-based telephony is a great way to get there.

While most are familiar with the savings-related aspects of cloud-based telephony?the ability to use the Internet to place calls instead of having to go through toll charges and the like?the idea of its remote operation is somewhat less familiar to most. Two common tools in cloud-based telephony are the local number and the toll-free number. In the case of a local number, users can select from a variety of prefixes depending on where they intend to offer their products or services, and offer those numbers up to the region they plan to make contact with customers. The customers then call the number as they would any other, but instead of going directly to a location in that area, the call instead goes to the cloud, where it?s then forwarded to the specific location a business wants to operate from. So while a business may be located in, say, Iowa, the callers are instead calling a number with a Florida prefix.

Local numbers serve the primary purpose of providing an easy, low-cost way for customers to interact with a business, and do so on a local level, but they serve the secondary purpose of allowing a business to be located anywhere while providing that local connection. For those businesses who might have been affected by Hurricane / Superstorm Sandy, they can fall back to an area that hasn?t been affected while still maintaining that local presence.

Additionally, toll-free numbers serve much the same purpose as local numbers in cloud-based telephony, but without the local connection. Since a toll-free number isn?t so much a phone number as it is a reference marker to a separate phone number, it allows a business to be located anywhere, but redirects calls to a particular phone number. For instance, a company with a phone number like 1-800-BALLOONS is not necessarily located in Boulder, Montana or Eugene, Oregon?just two places with a 225 prefix?so much as it?s simply using the word ?balloons? to refer back to another number elsewhere.

The issue of business continuity?of being able to pull stakes and move anywhere in the midst of disaster and yet still be able to operate?is one of vital importance to many businesses. Individual retailers, service industries, and more are all types of businesses that can benefit from having a disaster response plan in place, and in the case of many businesses, a large portion of that disaster planning is having a way to work remotely on hand. Cloud-based telephony is a great way to ensure that business can carry on in the face of even the greatest of calamities.

While our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the recent hurricane, the ability to protect businesses, and ensure their continued operation, can only be helped with the proper use of cloud-based telephony.

AP PHOTOS: Scenes from the Romney campaign

After waking up in Tampa, Fla., Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney walked down a hotel hallway carrying his own bags as he prepared to leave one swing state behind and make his way to another. Accompanied by a few Secret Service agents, he got into his SUV. The interior was surprisingly cramped.

An AP photographer was granted behind-the-scenes access by the Romney campaign to accompany Romney as he traveled Sunday to the critical battleground state of Ohio with just days to go before the election. Pool photographers who regularly travel with Romney requested the access to the campaign. The Obama campaign has not offered such access so far.

On this particular morning, the mood was casual and light. Romney joked with aides, who readily returned the ribbing. Soon after wheels-up for Ohio, advisers convened a strategy meeting in the front of the plane with senior adviser Kevin Madden and chief strategist Stuart Stevens looking over their iPads and MacBooks. Romney was taking notes on a paper writing pad.

Landing at Dayton International Airport, Romney was met on the plane by Sen. Rob Portman, who had brought him a cookie bearing his image and also a page of a local newspaper that had endorsed his candidacy for president. Greeted by running mate Paul Ryan on the tarmac, the group boarded a campaign bus for the two-hour ride to Celina.

In between making hands-free conference calls on their iPhones, they watched Sunday football on the motorcoach's television screens. Romney made himself snacks of peanut butter and honey sandwiches and also had a banana with peanut butter, which he scooped out of a jar with a plastic spoon.

Upon arriving at a campaign event, Romney regularly meets with supporters backstage for photos, or "clicks" as they're called. After that, while he is being introduced, he waits in a holding area, or "green room." A video monitor is available for him to watch the podium as speeches are made before his entrance.

The mood continued to be jovial, with Romney joking around with sports equipment in one holding room and singing with The Oak Ridge Boys in another holding room in a different city.

At the end of a long day of campaigning, Romney took advantage of a quiet moment at the back of his bus to make some phone calls. He later came up to the front of the bus to watch the final game of the World Series with aides, before arriving at a modest hotel in Mansfield. He headed up an elevator for the night, surrounded by Secret Service agents.

Test developed to detect early-stage diseases with naked eye: Prototype ultra sensitive disease sensor developed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have developed a prototype ultra-sensitive sensor that would enable doctors to detect the early stages of diseases and viruses with the naked eye, according to research published?October 28 in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The team, from Imperial College London, report that their visual sensor technology is ten times more sensitive than the current gold standard methods for measuring biomarkers. These indicate the onset of diseases such as prostate cancer and infection by viruses including HIV.

The researchers say their sensor would benefit countries where sophisticated detection equipment is scarce, enabling cheaper and simpler detection and treatments for patients.

In the study, the team tested the effectiveness of the sensor by detecting a biomarker called p24 in blood samples, which indicates HIV infection.

Professor Molly Stevens, from the Departments of Materials and Bioengineering at Imperial College London, says: "It is vital that patients get periodically tested in order to assess the success of retroviral therapies and check for new cases of infection. Unfortunately, the existing gold standard detection methods can be too expensive to be implemented in parts of the world where resources are scarce. Our approach affords for improved sensitivity, does not require sophisticated instrumentation and it is ten times cheaper, which could allow more tests to be performed for better screening of many diseases."

The researchers in this study also tested samples for the biomarker called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is an early indicator for Prostate Cancer. The team say the sensor can also be reconfigured for other viruses and diseases where the specific biomarker is known.

The sensor works by analysing serum, derived from blood, in a disposable container. If the result is positive for p24 or PSA, there is a reaction that generates irregular clumps of nanoparticles, which give off a distinctive blue hue in a solution inside the container. If the results are negative the nanoparticles separate into ball-like shapes, creating a reddish hue. Both reactions can be easily seen by the naked eye.

The team also report that the sensor was so sensitive that it was able to detect minute levels of p24 in samples where patients had low viral loads, which could not be diagnosed using existing tests such as the Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test and the gold standard nucleic acid based test.

Dr Roberto de la Rica, co-author of the study from the Department of Materials at Imperial College London, adds: "We have developed a test that we hope will enable previously undetectable HIV infections and indicators of cancer to be picked up, which would mean people could be treated sooner. We also believe that this test could be significantly cheaper to administer, which could pave the way for more widespread use of HIV testing in poorer parts of the world."

The next stage of the research will see the team approaching not-for-profit global health organisations, which could provide strategic direction and funding for manufacturing and distributing the sensor to low income countries.

Friday night football: Mountaineers out of running for state in Region ...

CHATSWORTH ? As king of North Murray?s homecoming festivities Friday night, it would have been fitting if celebrated Mountaineers quarterback Brady Swilling had led his team to a victory against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.

Unfortunately for North Murray, that did not happen ? but it was not for lack of trying by Swilling and his teammates who fell 47-35 to the Warriors in a Region 5-3A shootout that took three hours to decide.

?I was flattered to be the king,? Swilling, a senior said of his brief activity at halftime as he helped crown queen Leeann Callihan. ?Homecoming is great, but it was about me playing football. We did play them closer than recent years. That certainly shows improvement for us.?

Any hope that the Mountaineers had of gaining a state playoff spot (4-4, 1-4 Region 5-3A) ended with the loss. The Warriors (6-2, 3-2) are vividly in the picture.

North Murray fell behind 26-7 in the second quarter and spent the night playing catch-up. After that, it twice pulled within six points but no closer.

?We just got off to such a bad start,? Mountaineers coach David Gann said. ?However, our guys battled. They just made several more big plays than we did. Our defense could not stop them, but our offense also helped them by turning the ball over.?

After LFO led following its initial drive, 7-0 on quarterback Trey Silmon?s 18-yard scamper, North Murray knotted the count, 7-7 on Swilling?s 31-yard pass to Hinton McConkey. Aaron Mendez kicked the extra point.

After falling behind by 19 points, the Mountaineers closed to 26-20 at halftime. Christian Bukle raced 42 yards on a run up the middle, and Swilling teamed with Jacob Mays on an 18-yard scoring toss to tighten the gap.

North Murray?s scoring in the second half came from Buckle on a 2-yard run, Mays on an 85-yard kickoff return and a safety relinquished purposely by the LFO offense.

The Warriors? Silmon also accounted for a 4-yard scoring run and a 4-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Parrish in the first half. Jacob Gilbert returned a North Murray fumble 55 yards for a touchdown.

During a fourth quarter scoreathon Silmon connected twice with Jackson Wallin on scores of 54 and 41 yards, with both plays starting in the flats. Pooh Harden scored on a 47-yard run.

Silvio Berlusconi faces verdict in tax fraud case

MILAN (AP) ? An Italian court is set to deliver verdicts against former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and 10 others in a six-year-old tax fraud trial.

Prosecutors have demanded a sentence of 3 years and eight months for Berlusconi and four years for the chairman of his Mediaset conglomerate Fedele Confalonieri.

Prosecutors allege the defendants purchased television rights for U.S. movies through a series of offshore companies, then falsely declared the payments to avoid taxes.

The trial began in July 2006, but was put on hold for a period due to a now-defunct immunity law.

Berlusconi has been tried numerous times for his business dealings. He has always been cleared or seen the statute of limitations expire. The verdict comes days after Berlusconi announced he will not run for premier in upcoming elections.

Why Paying For Car Insurance is Worth Every Penny | Betty Does

Auto Insurance South Milwaukee There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With so many vehicles on the road, accidents will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a minor setback and a major trial. But why do you need insurance and just how much should you buy? Coverage requirements vary by state/province but usually include the following: Pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. State laws usually mandate minimum amounts, but higher amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is usually set by the state. ?The Leader? Is a Provocative Program of One-Act Plays by Eugene ...

Bare Theatre of Raleigh will present "The Leader," a program of one-act plays about politics by Eugene Ionesco and others, on Oct. 25-28 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham and on Nov. 3, 4, and 8-11 at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh

Bare Theatre of Raleigh will present ?The Leader,? a program of one-act plays about politics by Eugene Ionesco and others, on Oct. 25-28 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham and on Nov. 3, 4, and 8-11 at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh

Just in time for the nationwide General Election on Nov. 6th, Bare Theatre of Raleigh, NC is presenting The Leader, a program of one-act plays about politics, including ?The Leader? by Romanian and French playwright provocateur Eugene Ionesco (1909-94), on Oct. 25-28 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham and on Nov. 3, 4, and 8-11 at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh.

According to Bare Theatre:

?With one of the most decisive elections in United States history approaching, Bare Theatre uses Eugene Ionesco?s 1953 absurdist comedy ?The Leader? as the centerpiece of a collection of pieces to capture the sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing implications of following a leader. This bizarre story raises questions about human nature and leadership without being specific to time, place, or person.

?[The Leader] will feature, in addition to the Ionesco play and other vignettes: clowns performing [Transportation Security Administration]-style security checkpoints, a brief look at the most impactful leaders in world history, a presentation on ?The Anatomy of a Leader,? fun with lemmings, and a choreographed game of ?king of the hill? with sinister turns.?

?I saw a production about 17 years ago that gave me the idea for this show,? reveals Bare Theatre managing director G. Todd Buker. ?The Eugene Ionesco play, ?The Leader,? is very short; but the students who put it on created a series of original vignettes to go along with it and fill out a full evening.

Buker, who will serve as director for this program of short plays, adds, ?There?s a lot to love about this show. I?m a big fan of Absurdism and Ionesco, but this was also a great opportunity for Bare Theatre to explore clowning and devising.

?Clowning in particular is a favorite,? Buker explains, ?because it breaks many standard rules of theater and the possibilities are endless. We did several workshops in the streets of downtown Raleigh, which I think was a fantastic experience for the cast. They had to approach strangers, and act ridiculous in the streets, which is exhilarating.?

Todd Buker adds, ?Our show is a collection of short works, all of which deal with a leader or lack thereof, or concentrate on followers of various types. We begin with Ionesco?s play, which is very relevant today even though it was written in 1953. That play then becomes the springboard for all of the other short plays and scenes we present.

?There is a short play about the myth of lemmings? mass suicide, another about a cult layoff, even a play written in rhyming couplets about medieval monarchs who sound very much like two well-known political parties,? says Buker.

He says, ?When we originally began the process, I had whiteboard full of ideas that the ensemble had come up with. We also had several short plays from Chuck Keith, who shares writing credit on the project. The most difficult part for me was deciding what to keep and what to let go, and conveying an overall vision to the cast when we were creating it together on the fly.

The Bare Theatre cast for The Leader includes (in alphabetical order) Loren Armitage, Jeff Buckner, Patrick Cox, Matt Fields, Matthew Hager, Joanna Herath, Diana McQueen, Stephen Wall, and Cassandra Wladyslava.

?The cast is the creative team,? claims The Leader?s director Todd Buker, ?and I suspect they may say that devising and some of the clown exercises were the most difficult. Two exercises in particular ? one in which they had to ask insane questions to strangers on the street (with no costume or makeup on to indicate they were performing), and another in which they had to enter a room and try to stand in a box using some basic rules of clowning. That sounds easy, I know, but it?s actually one of the most difficult exercises, because the clown repeatedly has to start over.?

In addition to director Todd Buker, who doubles as lighting and sound designer for The Leader, the Bare Theatre creative team for the show includes physical/fight choreographer Heather J. Strickland, assisted by Jason Bailey; costume designers Susan Buker and Mollie Earls; and stage manager Emily Huffman. (Strickland is the artistic director of Bare Theatre.)

In keeping with the Raleigh-based theater company?s name and reputation for no-frills productions, Todd Buker says, the set for The Leader is a ?Bare stage, only a walk-through metal detector, a platform, a projector screen, and a coat rack.

He adds, ?Each scene is lit according to the needs of the script and the mood. A strobe light is used during the final scene.?

Buker says, ?The cast uses base costumes of a white tank top and black pants, with other pieces such as shirts, coats, tabards, and dresses being used for various scenes. The most unusual costumes are for a short play in which the actors play sperm cells.?

The Leader director Todd Buker says, ?While this show does coincide with the 2012 election, it is not political in any way, and does not directly address the current candidates. This collection is intended as thought-provoking entertainment that will hopefully give the audience lots of laughs.?

He adds, ?The show is suitable for most ages, except for possibly very young children. There is a little bit of adult language, and some adult themes. It is also worth noting that the show contains a few loud gunshots onstage, and a strobe light is used. Onstage violence is mostly stylized and not graphic in nature.?

Bare Theatre presents THE LEADER at 8 p.m. Oct. 25-27 and 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at Common Ground Theatre, 4815B Hillsborough Rd., Durham, North Carolina 27705; and at 8 p.m. Nov. 3, 2 p.m. Nov. 4, 8 p.m. Nov. 8-10, and 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Visual Art Exchange, 309 W. Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper ? Food ...

For very many years I only associated tequila with bad margaritas or single shots taken quickly and finished with a lick of salt off of my hand followed by sucking on a wedge of lime (oh yes I did!).? About a decade ago I was schooled a bit about the value of aging and discovered the beauty of Reposado and Anejo tequilas. I began making my favorite margaritas and enjoyed good sipping tequila. It was a great lesson learned and those cocktails were good?but that was it, that was all tequila was good for, right?

Absolutely not! Last year I made a warm coffee cocktail that was spiked with tequila and Kahlau and it was so good. I think using tequila typically in conjunction with citrus has too often limited our imaginations when thinking about possibilities. Used in a cocktail like this one the effect is warming and rich and wonderful. You have to promise to try it so you can also enjoy how good it is!

I feel most fortunate to have developed relationships with some brands both new and previously unfamiliar that help to support this weekly effort by providing me with the adult beverages I need to do a cocktail each week. The best part might be trying something new and this tequila is a keeper. Peligroso Tequila is is a rare, 84 proof ultra premium Tequila from agave that is grown on an estate in Jalisco, Mexico. Their Silver tequila is just barely aged so not as smooth as a Reposado would be so I thought it would be perfect blended in this cocktail?a hot chocolate made from milk, Ibarra; a Mexican chocolate bar with cinnamon that is perfect for hot chocolate and the addition of Scharffenberger Natural Cocoa Powder that I thought would really up the chocolate factor; making it an even richer component.

We had some snow last night in Denver; fall here is as wacky as spring! 80 degrees one day; snow the next before all the leaves have turned and fallen! I?m going to try and survive?and this cocktail is going to help!

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper

A wonderful and warming cocktail for fall and winter.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Milk (I used 1% and it was good)
  • 1 and 1/2 bars Ibarra chocolate; broken into chunks
  • 6 Tbsp Scharffenberger Cocoa Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Cane Sugar
  • 1/8 - 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (start with 1/8 tsp and season to taste)
  • 4 ozs Tequila
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Ground Cinnamon for Garnish

Preparation

  1. Warm the milk in a medium size heavy saucepan on medium heat, watching carefully.
  2. Add the Ibarra chocolate, the cocoa powder and the sugar.
  3. Heat until the chocolate dissolves, whisking to combine all ingredients.
  4. Season with the cayenne pepper. Start with 1/8 teaspoon and season to your taste.
  5. Pour the warm milk into 2 large mugs and add 2 oz of tequila.
  6. Top with whipping cream; sprinkle whipping cream with cinnamon.

Presidential election hits $2B fundraising mark

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The 2012 presidential campaign passed the $2 billion mark in fundraising Thursday, fueled by an outpouring of cash from both ordinary citizens and the wealthiest Americans hoping to influence the selection of the country's next leader.

The eye-popping figure puts the election on track to be the costliest in modern U.S. history. It comes amid a campaign finance system vastly altered by the proliferation of outside groups and "super" political committees that are bankrolling a barrage of TV ads in battleground states.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have brought in about $1.7 billion so far this election, according to fundraising reports submitted Thursday night.

Added to that: nearly $300 million in donations involving super PACs since early 2011, as well as tens of millions more in donations to nonprofit groups that run election-related ads but don't have to disclose their donors.

Obama, the Democratic Party and related fundraising committees raised a combined $88.8 million for the first 15 days of October, reports showed, while Romney's fundraising apparatus reaped $111.8 million during the same period.

The largest of those were two pro-Romney groups. American Crossroads, a Republican-leaning super PAC with ties to former President George W. Bush's longtime political counselor Karl Rove, reported raising at least $79.6 million through Oct. 15. Restore Our Future, founded by former Romney aides, reported pulling in $130.6 million so far. And Priorities USA, a pro-Obama group founded by two former aides to the president, reported $62.8 million in contributions.

Added to that: nearly $300 million in donations involving super PACs since early 2011, as well as tens of millions more in donations to nonprofit groups ? often affiliated with super PACs ? that run election-related ads but don't have to disclose their donors.

Presidential candidates in 2008 raised more than $1.8 billion in inflation-adjusted figures. This time, new factors have contributed to the escalation in the campaign money chase.

This year marked the first time that both major party candidates opted out from the public financing system established to set limits on how much a presidential candidate can raise and spend. Both Obama and Romney would have been eligible for about $100 million in taxpayer money to support their campaigns through the general election, but both gambled ? correctly ? that they could raise and spend far more.

In 2008, Obama became the first presidential contender to refuse all public financing while his Republican rival, Arizona Sen. John McCain, accepted the government funds. The lopsided result ? Obama outspent McCain by more than 2-to-1 in the general election ? effectively ended public funding as an option for serious candidates.

With the 2012 election so tight, both Obama and Romney have spent considerable time at high-dollar fundraising events courting wealthy donors. Romney last month lamented the time spent fundraising rather than speaking to larger groups of voters, saying that "fundraising is a part of politics when your opponent decides not to live by the federal spending limits."

Both Obama and Romney have raised considerable cash from small donors, too, especially the president. His campaign has reported that more than 4 million donors have contributed.

Obama spokesman Adam Fetcher acknowledged Thursday that Romney and his supportive super PACs were outspending the president on the airwaves. He said the Obama campaign was making efforts to expand its donor base as it headed into the remaining days before the election.

Federal election regulators have raised the limit on individual contributions to candidates, which means campaigns can solicit more money from donors than they have in the past. Individual donors can now give a total of $5,000 in the primary and general elections to a candidate, compared to just $2,000 in 2000.

Michael Toner, a Republican campaign finance lawyer and former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, said the close race between Obama and Romney and the sharply polarized electorate have also played a role in accelerating the dash for dollars.

"I don't know any campaign manager who thinks they have too much money. In this political 50-50 environment you can't ever have enough," Toner said. "Every last million could make the difference in who is elected."

But the emergence of super PACs and other outside groups, emboldened partly by the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court in 2010, has done more than anything else to reshape the contours of presidential campaign fundraising. A handful of federal court cases have broadly eased campaign finance regulations, allowing donors to give unlimited sums. That kind of money has largely been funneled to super PACs, which can raise and spend money on behalf of candidates as long as they don't coordinate expenditures or strategy with the campaign.

"The distinctive factor in this election is the outside money being spent and the corrupting money financing it," said Fred Wertheimer, a longtime campaign finance reform advocate. "It's a symbol of the disastrous campaign finance system we have and the undue influence relatively few well-financed individuals and interest groups now have over government decisions.

Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is the top super PAC donor this year. Adelson, a billionaire, has contributed more than $40 million to Republican super PACs, including those backing Romney and former candidate and House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Amazon Announces Loss On LivingSocial - Business Insider

LivingSocialThe daily deal bubble continues to burst.

Latest victim Amazon, which invested in LivingSocial, a private competitor of Groupon.

In its just-announced earnings, the company says:

"Net loss was $274 million in the third quarter, or $0.60 per diluted share, compared with net income of $63 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, in third quarter 2011. The third quarter 2012 includes a loss of $169 million, or $0.37 per diluted share, related to our equity-method share of the losses reported by LivingSocial, primarily attributable to its impairment charge of certain assets, including goodwill."

To put that that into perspective, the company invested $175 million in LivingSocial. So basically, complete wipe-out.

Read the full Amazon earnings coverage here >

UPDATE: Via AllThingsD, here's the internal memo LivingSocial CEO Tim O'Shaughnessy sent out in regards to the Amazon news:

Hey all ?

This afternoon, our investor and partner Amazon.com announced its quarterly earnings. Because our financials for the quarter had a material impact on its results, Amazon included some information about our numbers in its announcement, and current estimates on some of our financials will be included in a filing that comes out tomorrow as well. This is similar to past quarters.

From those announcements, you?re likely to see news articles saying that we hurt Amazon?s earnings and lost a ton of money. That doesn?t tell the full story, so I wanted to share some more info on our third-quarter results with you, so you ? and the customers you serve ? can better understand what they mean.

First, here?s what you can glean from Amazon?s filings: We had roughly $124 million in revenue last quarter, our operating expense was approximately $193 million, and we had an operating loss of around $565 million and an overall net loss of about $566 million for the quarter.

Sounds like a lot of losses, right? Or maybe you wonder how our losses could be higher than our operating expenses? Well, what the numbers don?t fully explain is that more than 95% of our estimated losses in the quarter involved non-cash items, in particular an estimated charge of around $496 million related to the write down of ?goodwill? in acquisitions we made last year and another $45 million or so related to stock compensation and other items.

In layman?s terms, we took a charge of around $496 million because we had to revalue some of the companies we acquired last year. As you know, the market has also dropped over that same time for similar public tech companies. Those changes in valuation showed up as an ?impairment? in our financial statements, but they do not affect the day-in, day-out operations of the business.

When you look at our financial position, the story is very different. For the third quarter of 2012, our global revenue nearly doubled on a year-over-year basis. More important, for the first time since 2009, we had positive operating cash flow for our company on a global basis in the month of September. In other words, we ended the last month of the quarter with more money in the bank than we had at the beginning of the month, marking an important milestone on our path to profitability and long-term success.

The September numbers from Yipit also show strong competitive trends. From August to September, we gained a whopping six points of North American market share against Groupon, as our share jumped from 21% to 24% while theirs fell from 56% in August to 53% in September. While those numbers included our world-record-setting Starbucks deal, they also showed strong growth without it.

In the big picture, all of these trends mean that LivingSocial is gaining control over our own destiny, an enviable position for any start-up and one that allows us to aggressively execute against our vision to build the leading platform for local commerce worldwide.

I know each of you is working hard and making strong moves every day to help us reach our goals. Thanks for all your efforts.

- Tim

Top 5 Ways to Improve your Website and Make it Mobile-friendly ...

After a brief hiatus, we are back publishing our monthly newsletter. Here at Seascape Web Design, we focus on designing and building websites that you manage. Is your website mobile-friendly? Reach millions of smartphone users with your new mobile-friendly website.

Top 5 Ways to Improve your Website and Make it Mobile-friendly
Increase your ROI with mobile-friendly business websiteSurfing the web with mobile devices is no longer just a growing trend ? it's a business reality. As tens of millions of smartphones are sold each month, experts predict that more than half of all Internet usage will come from phones and tablets in the next 18 months.

This means that mobile web users are not just a small part of your customer base, but possibly the biggest part of it. With that in mind, here are five ways to make your business website mobile-friendly:

1. Ask your web developer for a mobile-friendly website design. Designing for smaller layouts that are used in mobile devices is?a special skill. Be sure to ask your web developer if he/she has experience in designing and building mobile-friendly websites. Ask to see samples of websites they have designed and built with mobile devices in mind.

I have an iPhone. How do I test my site on Android phones? There are several websites available to test to see how your website displays in the various sizes of smartphone and tablets. http://www.responsinator.com is a great site that shows you pictures of what your site looks like in Android phones as well as iPhone, iPad and Kindles. Note that responsinator.com looks best on large-width screens such as desktops or laptops.

2. Mobile-friendly websites use a simpler approach.
A lot of the things that were once in style in business web design ? like flash animations, long blocks of text, etc. ? are no longer preferred. On the one hand, customers are busier than ever, and don't have time to sift through complicated menus and videos to find what they're looking for. Put your logo and contact info at the top of the page so customers can contact you quickly.

3. Use short forms with drop-down menus.
If you've ever tried to type multiple paragraphs in a text message, then you already know why short forms are so important on mobile-friendly websites. Replace text fields with drop-down menus and multiple-choice buttons. The less your customers have to actually type, the more likely they are to actually contact you and make a purchase.
?
4. Use thick navigation buttons that are easy to use with fingers or thumbs. Many mobile users are surfing the web while on the go ? waiting for the bus, walking the dog ? and will use their fingers or thumbs to navigate your website. Be sure to use large buttons for submitting forms and larger text for text links. Limit the number of main menu options to 5 buttons or less.

5. Give each page a quick call to action. Give your potential customers the option of taking action like downloading a free ebook, requesting more information or signing up for a newsletter. Avoid asking mobile visitors to do anything complicated or time-consuming.
