Spelman College In Georgia Ditches Athletics Program ? CBS Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) ? Spelman College in Atlanta is ditching its athletics program and spending the money on a campus-wide health and fitness program.

The president of the historically black women?s college says the school was spending about $1 million on its athletics program but that money is now going to benefit all 2,100 students, not just the 80 student-athletes.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum said Thursday that public health is a major concern. She says nearly one out of every two students have high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or are obese.

David Ridpath is an associate professor of sports administration at Ohio University and president-elect of a group that advocates for changes in college athletics. He calls the announcement eye-catching and predicts it could serve as a model at other schools.

How To Avoid Buying A Flooded Car From The US? - Car Talk ...

How To Avoid Buying A Flooded Car From The US? by ojeffo: 12:48pm On Oct 30

i pre ordered a car from a friend whose brother is based in the united states, and he is yet to deliver the vehicle, and im not even sur if he has purchased it.My fears now is that he may just finally get me a flooded car, which might develop very bad problems later.pls i need ur contributions.

Re: How To Avoid Buying A Flooded Car From The US? by Fhemmmy: 3:35pm On Oct 30Since you are not there to inspect by yourself, this will be a tough one, but you could send this to the dude helping you to buy:
There are also some signs of flooding that you can easily check for, including the following:

Signs of mud or silt on the exterior, including wheel wells
Signs of mud, silt, water, or moisture on the interior, including in the glove box and dashboard
Signs of mud, silt, or a water line on the interior of the trunk or engine compartment
Moisture or water line in signal lamps
Sellers who are reluctant to let you see the engine, trunk, or any part of the vehicle

I respect everybody's comment here but my advice is this: Kindly ask the person to send ur money back by giving excuses such as medical emergency (God forbid). I live in the US and knows whats going on, as from today the market will be saturated with the flooded cars selling for cheap price (which is a good deal for naija dealers). if you ask the guy not to buy a flooded car there is no way you can know cos the cars will be properly cleaned to avoid odor and suspicious signs (as stated by oga fhemmmy). Accepting your loss on the transaction fees is better then buying the junk in market now. This is a salt water flood.
And for those contemplating on buying American cars soon, pls buy from the West coast or buy from Europe.

How long ago did you give him the money for the deal? Cos getting a reliable ride takes time, and sometimes depends on your budget.

Has he bought the car yet? If yes, no need for refund. If No, refund may be applicable.

If he buys the car now and it is a flood car. What can you do? Nothing!

But to satisfy your curiosity....the easiest give away of flooded car which is very difficult to hide is the interior carpet.
Some extreme detailing may hide other warning signs of mud. When you get the car, pry open the carpet and check for signs of mud.
Nobody is meticulous enough to detail under carpet of a car...They hope buyers wont be knowledgeable enough to look.

If mud exists under the carpet, oh well....

Either way, whatever the flooding did not destroy, Nigeria mechanics will.

It was not the whole of US that was flooded, the flood only affected the east coast-New York and New Jersey. You can still buy cars from places like California,Texas,Chicago and other major cities in the US.
The whole of America was not flood, get the facts right and buy your car without fear.

I'm not a car expert but this was my experience when I went through a third party to purchase my vehicle. It took a while for the guy to find the right vehicle at auction. He told me at the time people were overbidding and he was making sure he got a quality vehicle that would last. If the person you're buying from is reputable this could be a factor since cars here are going for way more than they should right now.Re: How To Avoid Buying A Flooded Car From The US? by InvertedHammer(m): 5:44pm On Oct 31

You dont need to get your money back. If the buyer in the US has auction license , you can go to the auction website and select the car you want and he will bid on it for you. The auction website will tell you (They have inspectors to tell you the condition ) what happened to the car you want to buy.

Tips And Advice For Dealing With Personal Bankruptcy | Siben ...

TIP! You may not want to delay your bankruptcy if you secure a higher-paying job just prior to filing. Your decision to file may still be justified.

If you are facing the possibility of bankruptcy and are looking for information to help you in your decision, you?ve come to the right place. The Internet has a lot of advice for you about how to avoid things like bankruptcy. The advice in this article may help you avoid bankruptcy.

TIP! Interview several attorneys before you hire one and ask questions about education and experience. Look around and see if you can find a bankruptcy lawyer specialist.

Examine all of the possible options available to you before you choose to file for bankruptcy. Take stock of your debts, and make sure that they can be wiped out by declaring bankruptcy. Some debts, especially credit card purchases made in the 90 days before the filing that do not include essential purchases, may not be included in the bankruptcy. Each state has different laws, so check your specific state laws.

TIP! If bankruptcy is just around the corner, do not use your credit cards anymore. Taking on a huge amount of debt will make it look as if you?re just going on a huge spending spree before attempting to have the slate wiped clean.

Keep in mind that there is the possibility that your bankruptcy could be denied so you should have an alternative plan in mind. If you are prepared prior to going in, it will be easier for you to anticipate the things that could happen if ever you are denied.

TIP! Avoid making payment that might interfere with your filing. The bankruptcy code stipulates that you cannot make certain payments to creditors or family for specified periods of time before filing.

If you are wondering whether personal bankruptcy is right for you, you first need to figure out what put you in your current financial state. Unplanned medical bills are one thing, but undisciplined spending on shopping trips is another. You should think about getting counseling or letting your family help you manage your money.

TIP! Make sure that you act at the appropriate time. Timing is critical, particularly when it comes to filing for bankruptcy.

Once you get to the stage of talking with a lawyer about your bankruptcy be sure to give them a list of all of your largest debts. You must provide them with information on lenders, hospitals, credit card companies, and even money you owe friends and family.

TIP! If you plan on filing bankruptcy, never wait too long. Some folks ignore financial difficulties for a long time, and this can be disastrous.

You should not have to pay for an initial legal consultation, and such meetings are great opportunities to ask lots of questions. Almost all lawyers will give a free consultation, so meet with more than one before making a decision on whom to hire. The lawyer who properly answers your questions is the one you should hire. You need not decide right away. So, this gives you plenty of time to consult with several attorneys.

TIP! Carefully consider which type of bankruptcy is right for you. There are a few types of bankruptcy.

If you headed toward for bankruptcy you have little to lose, so honesty is the best policy. Lying about assets and debts is something you really should not do at all. This not only unethical, it is simply illegal. You could go to prison for lying on a bankruptcy petition.

TIP! It is still possible to get a mortgage or car loan, even if you are filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. It is more difficult.

Most people that file for bankruptcy try not to use credit cards again. Using credit helps you build up your credit again. If you don?t ever use credit, your credit history will not improve, and you may not be able to purchase important things like a home and car. Keep it simple with one card and take a slow approach to rebuilding.

TIP! Filing for bankruptcy doesn?t mean you will lose all your assets. Your personal items will stay with you.

Prior to filing, do not use your credit card to get a cash advance, knowing your debts will be eliminated. This is illegal. It?s fraud, and you can still be responsible for paying it back even after declaring bankruptcy.

TIP! Go to a bankruptcy lawyer for advice, instead of filing on your own. In addition to providing you with advice, they can appear in court for you and make the whole process easier.

If you are seriously thinking of filing bankruptcy, make sure that you contact an attorney. You might not understand all of the various aspects to filing for bankruptcy. When you engage the services of a bankruptcy lawyer, you can be assured of getting the help your need to proceed correctly.

TIP! Filing for bankruptcy is something many people are forced to do when there debts become too much of a burden, and they can no longer afford to pay them. If you have unmanageable debt, you need to familiarize yourself with regional bankruptcy laws.

Planning can make a big difference. Any steps you take that give you additional time to address your debts are good ones. Doing so can help you avoid bankruptcy. Plan your future out now.

(AP) ? Frustration ? and in some cases fear ? mounted in New York City on Thursday, three days after Superstorm Sandy. Traffic backed up for miles at bridges, large crowds waited impatiently for buses into Manhattan, and tempers flared in gas lines.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city would send bottled water and ready-to-eat meals into the hardest-hit neighborhoods through the weekend, but some New Yorkers grew dispirited after days without power, water and heat and decided to get out.

"It's dirty, and it's getting a little crazy down there," said Michael Tomeo, who boarded a bus to Philadelphia with his 4-year-old son. "It just feels like you wouldn't want to be out at night. Everything's pitch dark. I'm tired of it, big-time."

Rima Finzi-Strauss decided to take bus to Washington. When the power went out Monday night in her apartment building on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, it also disabled the electric locks on the front door, she said.

"We had three guys sitting out in the lobby last night with candlelight, and very threatening folks were passing by in the pitch black," she said. "And everyone's leaving. That makes it worse."

The mounting despair came even as the subways began rolling again after a three-day shutdown. Service was restored to most of the city, but not the most stricken parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, where the tunnels were flooded.

Bridges into the city were open, but police enforced a carpooling rule and peered into windows to make sure each car had at least three people. The rule was meant to ease congestion but appeared to worsen it. Traffic jams stretched for miles, and drivers who made it into the city reported that some people got out of their cars to argue with police.

Rosemarie Zurlo said she planned to leave Manhattan for her sister's place in Brooklyn because her own apartment was freezing, "but I'll never be able to come back here because I don't have three people to put in my car."

With only partial subway service, lines at bus stops swelled. More than 1,000 people packed the sidewalk outside an arena in Brooklyn, waiting for buses to Manhattan. Nearby, hundreds of people massed on a sidewalk.

When a bus pulled up, passengers rushed the door. A transit worker banged on a bus window, yelled at people inside, and then yelled at people in the line.

With the electricity out and gasoline supplies scarce, many gas stations across the New York area remained closed, and stations that were open drew long lines of cars that spilled out onto roads.

At a station near Coney Island, almost 100 cars lined up, and people shouted and honked, and a station employee said he had been spit on and had coffee thrown at him.

In a Brooklyn neighborhood, a station had pumps wrapped in police tape and a "NO GAS" sign, but cars waited because of a rumor that gas was coming.

"I've been stranded here for five days," said Stuart Zager, who is from Brooklyn and was trying to get to his place in Delray Beach, Fla. "I'm afraid to get on the Jersey Turnpike. On half a tank, I'll never make it."

The worst was over at least for public transportation. The Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North were running commuter trains again, though service was limited. New Jersey Transit had no rail service but most of its buses were back.

The storm killed at least 90 people in the U.S. New York City raised its death toll on Thursday to 38, including two Staten Island boys, 2 and 4, swept from their mother's arms by the floodwaters.

In New Jersey, many people were allowed back into their neighborhoods Thursday for the first time since Sandy ravaged the coastline. Some found minor damage, others total destruction.

The storm cut off barrier islands, smashed homes, wrecked boardwalks and hurled amusement park rides into the sea. Atlantic City, on a barrier island, remained under mandatory evacuation.

More than 4.6 million homes and businesses, including about 650,000 in New York and its northern suburbs, were still without power. Consolidated Edison, the power company serving New York, said electricity should be restored by Saturday to customers in Manhattan and to homes and offices served by underground power lines in Brooklyn.

In darkened neighborhoods, people walked around with miner's lamps on their foreheads and bicycle lights clipped to shoulder bags and, in at least one case, to a dog's collar. A Manhattan handyman opened a fire hydrant so people could collect water to flush toilets.

"You can clearly tell at the office, or even walking down the street, who has power and who doesn't," said Jordan Spiro, who lives in the blackout zone. "New Yorkers may not be known as the friendliest bunch, but take away their ability to shower and communicate and you'll see how disgruntled they can get."

Some public officials expressed exasperation at the relief effort.

James Molinaro, president of the borough of Staten Island, suggested that people not donate money to the American Red Cross because the Red Cross "is nowhere to be found."

"We have hundreds of people in shelters throughout Staten Island," he said. "Many of them, when the shelters close, have nowhere to go because their homes are destroyed. These are not homeless people. They're homeless now."

Josh Lockwood, the Red Cross' regional chief executive, said 10 trucks began arriving to Staten Island on Thursday morning and a kitchen was set up to distribute meals. Lockwood defended the agency, saying relief workers were stretched thin.

"We're talking about a disaster where we've had shelters set up from Virginia to Indiana to the state Maine, so there's just this tremendous response," he said. "So I would say no one organization is going to be able to address the needs of all these folks by themselves."

In Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, Mary Wilson, 75, was buying water from a convenience store that was open but had no power. She said she had been without running water or electricity for three days, and lived on the 19th floor.

She walked downstairs Thursday for the first time because she ran out of bottled water and felt she was going to faint. She said she met people on the stairs who helped her down.

"I did a lot of praying: 'Help me to get to the main floor.' Now I've got to pray to get to the top," she said. "I said, 'I'll go down today or they'll find me dead.'"

Why Women Make Drama

http://xkcd.com/1124/

Question:

Why is there so much drama in relationships?

1. Women are emo psycho bitches.

2. Women use drama to test and control men.?

3. Male behavior provokes a lot of female drama.?

4. Men and women don?t communicate very well.

5. Men fly into jealous rages.

6. It?s addictive.

7. It?s effective.

Answer: All of the above.?

?

Women like to have their emotions activated. We?d rather be wracked with uncertainty over a guy than bored. We?re raised on romantic and life scripts that feature conflict before resolution, adversity before triumph. We want life, and certainly mating, to be interesting. We want to compete with other women and win the male prize. We employ a wide variety of strategies to capture male interest and increase male investment, and one of them is Making Drama.?

Why do women Make Drama?

1. To quell uncertainty

For better or worse, women need to understand why. I don?t believe any woman in history has ever responded to ?We?re done.? with ?OK.? You dropped me without a word. Why? You were interested in me last week and now you?re hitting on someone new. Why? We want to know how you are feeling and why you are feeling that way. This is not necessarily fair, but we will often press very hard for answers to our questions. When we press too hard, we?re Making Drama.

Jared told Julia that he liked her. She?d been attracted to him for two years, so she was ecstatic. They made out and he texted throughout the week. The very next weekend, her roommate told her she?d seen Jared with a girl who was reportedly his girlfriend of two months. When Julia next saw him at a party, she downed a few beers, then marched up to Jared, demanding an apology and an explanation.

2. To seek reassurance

The nature of what women want ? commitment ? is variable while dating, and includes many stages. Even in a relationship, women wonder if they?ve got a ?fake boyfriend,? i.e. glorified hookup, on their hands. There are constant questions about what kinds of expectations are appropriate. When do I meet his friends? Family? How many evenings per week will we spend together? How much ?guy? time does he want? Why hasn?t he asked me to the formal, only a week away?

Women are perpetually aware that commitment in this era of delayed marriage is an amorphous thing, and it can be withdrawn at any moment by either party. As a result, we often feel the need to take the temperature of the relationship. Making Drama is not the best way of doing this, but it can be effective.

Katie and Rob had been dating for a couple of months. She knew he had a group of close friends, but he had never mentioned getting together with them, and she wondered whether he was purposely keeping her away from them. Katie stewed about this for several days, and decided she would bring it up if it continued. That weekend, Rob said he?d see her Friday because he was going to a party on Saturday with some other people. Katie burst into tears and accused Rob of not caring for her, and of being ashamed of her.

3. To enliven the relationship

Conflict and friction create drama, followed by denouement. It?s very common for one party to Make Drama when a relationship goes stale or stagnates. The denouement, of course, is makeup sex, which can often be so passionate that couples slip into the pattern of fighting just so they can have it. Unfortunately, the Law of Diminishing Returns applies here, and the relationship usually ends when the sex becomes a sordid, tawdry show between two people who can no longer stand one another.

After two years together, James and Margaret knew each other?s triggers. Whenever they went to parties or hung out in large groups, they usually wound up arguing. The night always ended with tearful shouting matches, followed by passionate sex, then cathartic cuddling.

4. To grab power

Women create drama in the form of shit tests to see if their partner is willing to lead, and to stand up to unreasonable requests. To acquiesce to her wishes is to?fail the shit test. Women Make Drama looking for pushback from a male they perceive as weak.?

The nicer Kevin was to Addie, the brattier she was in return. He tried even harder to be understanding. Addie told her friends that Kevin had no backbone and dumped him.

5. To exact payback

Women look for ways to get even with men who dump them or otherwise treat them poorly. It might be anything from rubbing a guy?s nose in a new relationship to making a drunken, sobbing fool of ourselves in front of his friends. Women are rarely hampered by pride when hurt ?- messy shows of emotion are common.

Courtney and Will used to date, and over winter break they?d hooked up again. Courtney thought it was back on, but when she saw Will the next night at the bar, he ignored her. She approached him and asked him why. When he told her he?d been so drunk he barely remembered the hookup, and that he regretted it, Courtney went and told their friends, who bought her several tequila shots. She wept and took comfort in the arms of Will?s buddy Gabe. Will responded with an outsized offense at the behavior of Courtney and Gabe, which was gratifying to Courtney.

6. To break up

When we don?t want to take responsibility for rejecting a man outright, we Make Drama to turn ourselves into Superbitch so that he?ll make it easy for us by initiating the breakup himself.

Kathy had found Tom so attractive when they first got together. But she?d been realizing recently that he wasn?t very bright ? she?d been embarrassed for him on several occasions in their writing seminar. Now every word out of his mouth sounded like a stupid grunt. He was so gentle and devoted to her, she couldn?t bear to tell him it was over. Kathy got a little bitchy, and when Tom felt hurt and confused, she told him to leave her the f*ck alone!?

7. Because some of us really are psycho

Some women fight with other women, including physically. They throw drinks, get blackout all the time, make scenes with exes, yell and scream and generally Make Drama. Their friendships are volatile, as are their family relationships. The male who gets involved with one of these women will bear the brunt of her tendencies to Make Drama 24/7. (Note: It has been observed that these women are rarely without boyfriends.)

Kirsten parties hard every weekend. Last weekend she was tossed out of a bar for throwing a drink in a stranger?s face for ?looking at me funny.? She?s got a loyal crew of girl followers, all of whom serve her. She?s always getting in and out of relationships, and when she fights with her boyfriends, she?s not above using physical violence. After dumping her last boyfriend, when he refused to drive over ?her stuff,? she sent out pics of him naked to all their mutual friends.

Why do men provoke Drama?

Men are less likely to manufacture drama, and ?they hate dealing with female drama with its complicated and messy emotions. However, they frequently provoke it in women, sometimes knowingly. Male-initiated drama most often serves the following purposes:

1. Expressing strong negative emotion

In an attempt to assuage sexual jealousy, they go on the attack, either toward their girlfriend, or their perceived male competition.

Mike saw Sally give her high school ex a big hug at the bar. He seethed with resentment at this show, which he knew was designed to make him mad. When Sally returned to his side, he ignored her. When she put her arm around his waist, he shouted, ?Take your hands off me, you slut!?

2. Instilling doubt

To shore up wavering female attraction or commitment, men may attempt to create anxiety or jealousy in their mate. This serves as a form of ego reassurance for the male.

Thomas regularly flirted with girls in front of Lauren, touching them and making suggestive remarks. Lauren couldn?t understand why Thomas kept doing this even though he said he loved her. The worry that she was not enough for him ?plagued her constantly, and crying scenes when they returned home were not unusual. Thomas enjoyed these scenes quite a bit, but Lauren soon left him for a guy who was less insecure.

3. Breaking up

Ending a relationship with no explanation or warning is a frequent male strategy, even though it most often leads to loud and unruly public scenes.

Mike was getting tired of Sarah, and he had an increasing desire to ?get some strange.? He knew he should just tell her, but he dreaded that conversation, so he fizzled it and hoped to avoid her, ignoring her calls and their usual haunts.

In an era when relationships between young people are often guided by the Principle of Least Interest, and emotional entanglements are inconvenient, most people in their late teens and 20s have very limited experience communicating with a romantic partner. Relationship skills are lacking. Making drama is a shortcut to getting an answer or a desired result. It compromises the quality of relationships and increases turnover. It may be gratifying in the short-term but is almost always regrettable afterwards.

The Better Way

Whether you seek reassurance, information, something different from your partner, to express anger or any other strong emotion, or even to break up, having a civil conversation while sober is always the better way to go.?

1. State your position with calm certainty and take responsibility for your feelings.

2. Convey your security and confidence (even if you feel a little shaky). You deserve honesty and respect.

3. Practice putting your feelings out there.?

?

?It makes me feel crappy when you flirt with my friends.?

?I feel like we?ve gotten into a rut. Are you bored too??

?I?ve enjoyed hanging out with you, but I don?t think we?re compatible. I don?t think we should see each other any more.?

?I do like you, but to be honest, a girl I?ve liked for a really long time just told me she feels the same way. I?m sorry I led you on, I didn?t see this coming. But I want to try and make it work with her. I?m sorry.?

I guarantee it will hurt less, and for a shorter period of time than it does when you?ve been rejected and disrespected.?

One word of warning:

Some guys will call you psycho just for making them uncomfortable, even if you?ve asked reasonable and direct questions. That?s a guy with very low self-awareness and personal responsibility. You dodged a bullet, so move on.

Some girls will act irrational no matter how honest and forthright you are. Be thankful you got out, and move on.

Canada export agency cuts 2012-13 forecasts, sees U.S. rebound

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's export credit agency cut its 2012 forecast for growth in exports of goods and services on Tuesday in the wake of the European crisis, but it said exporters will see benefits next year from a recovery in the U.S. private sector.

Export Development Canada said 2012 exports would increase by 4.6 percent from 2011, down from the 7.1 percent it forecast in April. The agency also cut its 2013 export growth forecast to 6.3 percent from an earlier 7.3 percent.

Canada is heavily dependent on exports of goods and services, which accounted for just over 31 percent of gross domestic product in 2011. Around 75 percent of all exports go to the United States.

Canada, bolstered by the huge U.S. market, ran trade surpluses for more than three decades until the economic crisis of 2008. In December of that year it posted a deficit, the first since March 1976, and since then has put in a much more mixed performance as the economy of its largest trading partner has struggled.

Exporters are finding it hard to compete because of the strength of the Canadian dollar, increased competition, and weak markets. Canada recorded five straight trade deficits from April to August.

"We had a very soft underbelly in the economy in the summer," the agency's chief economist, Peter Hall, said in a phone interview, referring to investor concerns about U.S. debt and about the Greek election in June.

"There was a lot of worry ... but what we are seeing now is that that indeed was a temporary event."

Hall said Canada's close ties to the United States mean exporters will benefit as the recovery there takes hold.

Real U.S. retail sales have grown at an 8 percent annualized rate for the last three months, while housing construction is up 35 percent year-over-year, he said. Canada is a major supplier of building materials to the United States.

U.S. corporations, Hall said, are sitting on $5.7 trillion worth of cash.

"You take a slight sliver of that and that has a dramatic impact. That's the way we're adding things up ... How can you possibly have aggressive growth numbers like that and see GDP at 2 percent or less going forward?" he said.

EDC says the U.S. economy will expand by 2.8 percent in 2013 following 2.3 percent growth this year.

"The Canadian trade numbers don't look great at the moment and certainly the third quarter numbers are very disturbing. But when we put it in context, there is no reason that we have to believe that that should continue, given what's going on in the United States," Hall said.

The EDC forecast Canadian growth of 2 percent in 2012 and 2.2 percent in 2013. It said the Canadian dollar will dip from parity with the U.S. dollar this year to 97 U.S. cents next year. (Editing by Janet Guttsman; and Peter Galloway)
