How Dove's 'Real Beauty Sketches' Became The Most Viral Ad ...

Innovid

This is the eighth of a seventeen-part series called "Video Revolution." This series brings you up to speed on innovations in the video advertising industry. "Video Revolution" is brought to you by Innovid.

Just one month after its release, Dove's "Real Beauty Sketches" has garnered more than 114 million total views, making it the most viral ad video of all time. (See video below.)

The short film used an FBI-trained sketch artist to draw women first based on their own self-perception and then based on that of a stranger. The stranger's descriptions were regularly more stereotypically attractive and?similar to what the subjects actually looked like ? hammering in Dove's point that women are often overly critical of their appearances and don't see their true beauty.

In spite of some criticism,?the video's self-esteem boosting message clearly resonated with a massive audience. It was uploaded?in 25 different languages to 33 of Dove's YouTube channels and has been viewed in more than 110 countries.

But how did it reach that extreme level of virality?

Emotions

Of course the simplest answer is that it elicited a strong emotional response from viewers.

Dove published survey data asserting, "Over half (54%) of women globally agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst beauty critic, which equates to a staggering 672 million women around the world."

David Waterhouse, the global head of content and PR at viral tracker Unruly Media agrees.

"I think what made this campaign perform particularly strongly is the content, which?elicited the intense emotional responses of ?warmth, ?happiness? and ?knowledge? from its target demographic ? one of the key factors behind a video?s sharing success," he told Business Insider. "But, more importantly, we are really seeing social motivations behind sharing becoming a lot more important. Brands have to give people a reason to share the video."

Sharability

A video really soars when consumers don't just want to watch it on YouTube, but they also want to share it with their friends. That's why good content is a key starting point.

According to Unruly's data, the video was shared 3.74 million times, which makes it the third most shared video of all time. And it even has a better share-to-view ratio (one share for every 30 views) than Evian's "Roller Babies" ad, the previous record holder (one share for every 30 views).

"Roller Babies" has been shared 3.6 million times on Facebook, 117,900 times on Twitter, and 1,800 blog posts.

But what really stands out is the Dove campaign's fast momentum starting the day of its launch.

"The pace of sharing for this campaign is also unprecedented," Waterhouse said. "In its first two weeks it attracted an incredible 3.17 million shares ? that?s more than any other ad has managed in the same period, including VW's? 'The Force,' [TNT's] 'Dramatic Surprise,' and 'Dumb Ways To Die,' the first, second and fourth most shared ads of all time respectively."

Here's a graph of Dove's "Real Beauty Sketches" share statistics in its first month:

Roll Out Strategy

The client also did some careful media planning.?

Dove Skin VP Fernando Machado told BI that the video first launched in four key markets: the U.S., Canada, Brazil, and Australia. It was then rolled out abroad, and uploaded in 25 languages and seen in 110 countries.

"The brand partnered with YouTube and Unruly to facilitate the distribution and seeding strategy," Machado said. "PR served as a key channel, generating initial placements with media such as the Today Show, Mashable, Huffington Post and Channel 7 Morning Show in Australia. The film was distributed to top media around the world and was quickly shared by women, men, media and even other brands."

This lead to 4 billion PR and blogger media impressions and counting.

Accurate distance measurement resolves major astronomical mystery

May 23, 2013 ? Sometimes astronomy is like real estate -- what's important is location, location, and location. Astronomers have resolved a major problem in their understanding of a class of stars that undergo regular outbursts by accurately measuring the distance to a famous example of the type.

The researchers used the National Science Foundation's Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and the European VLBI Network (EVN) to precisely locate one of the most-observed variable-star systems in the sky -- a double-star system called SS Cygni -- at 370 light-years from Earth. This new distance measurement meant that an explanation for the system's regular outbursts that applies to similar pairs also applies to SS Cygni.

"This is one of the best-studied systems of its type, but according to our understanding of how these things work, it should not have been having outbursts. The new distance measurement brings it into line with the standard explanation," said James Miller-Jones, of the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research in Perth, Australia.

SS Cygni, in the constellation Cygnus the Swan, is a dense white dwarf star in a close orbit with a less-massive red dwarf. The strong gravity of the white dwarf pulls material from its companion into a swirling disk surrounding the white dwarf. The two stars orbit each other in only about 6.6 hours. On an average of once every 49 days, a powerful outburst greatly brightens the system.

This type of system is called a dwarf nova, and, based on other examples, scientists proposed that the outbursts result from changes in the rate at which matter moves through the disk onto the white dwarf. At high rates of mass transfer from the red dwarf, the rotating disk remains stable, but when the rate is lower, the disk can become unstable and undergo an outburst.

This mechanism seemed to work for all known dwarf novae except for SS Cygni, based on previous distance estimates. Hubble Space Telescope measurements in 1999 and 2004 put SS Cygni at a distance of about 520 light-years.

"That was a problem. At that distance, SS Cygni would have been the brightest dwarf nova in the sky, and should have had enough mass moving through its disk to remain stable without any outbursts," Miller-Jones said.

The closer distance measured with the radio telescopes means that the system is intrinsically less bright, and now fits the characteristics outlined in the standard explanation for dwarf-nova outbursts, the scientists said.

The astronomers made the new distance measurement using the VLBA and EVN, both of which use widely-separated radio telescopes that work together as a single, extremely precise, telescope. These systems are capable of the most accurate measurements of positions in the sky available in astronomy.

By observing SS Cygni when Earth is on opposite sides of its orbit around the Sun, astronomers can measure the subtle shift in the object's apparent position in the sky, compared to the background of more-distant objects. This effect, called parallax, allows scientists to directly measure an object's distance by applying simple, high-school trigonometry.

The astronomers knew that SS Cygni emits radio waves during its outbursts, so they made their radio-telescope observations after receiving reports from amateur astronomers that an outburst was underway. They observed the object during outbursts from 2010 to 2012.

The difference in the distance measurements between the Hubble visible-light and the radio observations may have several causes, the scientists said. The radio observations were made against a background of objects far beyond our own Milky Way Galaxy, while the Hubble observations used stars within our Galaxy as reference points. The more-distant objects provide a better, more stable, reference, the astronomers pointed out. The radio observations, they added, are immune to other possible sources of error as well.

Discovered in 1896, SS Cygni is a popular object for amateur astronomers. According to the American Association of Variable Star Observers, not a single outburst of SS Cygni has been missed since its discovery. It has been observed nearly half a million times, and its brightness variations carefully tracked, making it one of the most intensely studied astronomical objects of the past century.

Miller Jones worked with Gregory Sivakoff of the University of Alberta and the University of Virginia, Christian Knigge of the University of Southhampton in the UK, Elmar Kording or Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and Matthew Templeton and Elizabeth Waagen of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, headquartered in Cambridge, Mass. The researchers published their findings in the journal Science.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation, operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc.

Microsoft Releases Windows 8 Tablet Ad Highlighting iPad's Flaws, High Price [iOS Blog]

vivotab2As noted by The Verge, Microsoft has released a new Windows 8 tablet ad that uses Siri to highlight a few of the iPad's shortcomings, depicting the ASUS VivoTab Smart tablet as a robust productivity machine while implying that the iPad is more suited to entertainment.

In the ad, which is entitled "Less Talking, More Doing," an iPad is depicted next to the aforementioned VivoTab Smart, showing off the system's multitasking capabilities and its built-in office apps. A Siri voiceover points out that the iPad does not support multiple windows at once and does not offer Microsoft Office apps. "I'm sorry, I can only do one thing at a time," Siri laments. "I guess PowerPoint isn't one of those things."

The ad ends on a humorous note, poking fun at a previous Apple commercial that depicted an iPad and iPad mini piano duet in GarageBand. The iPad is shown operating GarageBand next to the hardworking Windows 8 tablet, and Siri asks "Should we just play chopsticks?"

Microsoft also focuses on the price difference between the two tablets in the ad, pointing out that the 64GB WiFi iPad costs $699 while the 64GB Asus VivoTab Smart is $250 cheaper at $449.

Anthony Weiner Enters 2013 New York Mayoral Race (VIDEO)

Anthony Weiner officially kicked off his New York mayoral campaign late Tuesday with a video announcement posted to YouTube.

The former New York congressman resigned in 2011 after posting a lewd photo of himself on Twitter. Weiner-- who is married to former top aide to Hillary Clinton, Huma Abedin, with whom he now has a son-- lied and said his account had been hacked. He later admitted to sending inappropriate online messages to six women.

Since his resignation, Weiner had remained largely out of the spotlight until last month, when in a New York Times Magazine profile, he didn't rule out the possibility of running again for mayor of New York City. He launched a campaign in 2005, but later dropped out.

Weiner addresses the scandal directly in the first official message of his campaign, and makes an appeal for a second chance. "Look, I made some big mistakes. And I know I let a lot of people down. But I've also learned some tough lessons," he says.

Abedin is featured prominently in the video, which is also posted on top of Weiner's revamped campaign website. It opens with a shot of the couple and their son having breakfast, and closes with the two of them sitting next to each other on a stoop.

"We love this city, and no one will work harder to make it better than Anthony," Abedin says.

Speculation had mounted for weeks that Weiner was going to throw his hat into the ring. He hired Danny Kedem as his campaign manager last week, and was spotted filming what was rumored to be a campaign video outside of his childhood home Thursday.

A recent NBC New York/Marist poll showed Weiner in second place, behind Christine Quinn, in the crowded field of 2013 Democratic mayoral candidates.

Exclusive: Glencore, Trafigura deals with Iran may have skirted sanctions - U.N

By Louis Charbonneau and Michelle Nichols

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Metals swap deals with Iran by Switzerland-based commodities giants Glencore Xstrata and Trafigura could have been a way of skirting international sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear program, according to a confidential U.N. Panel of Experts report seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

Reuters reported on March 1 that Glencore had supplied thousands of tons of alumina to an Iranian firm that has provided aluminum to Iran's nuclear program, an allegation Glencore confirmed as accurate. Afterward, Trafigura acknowledged it had also traded with the same Iranian firm.

Swiss authorities said at the time that they saw no evidence of U.N. or Swiss sanctions violations by Glencore, but the U.N. experts, who monitor compliance with the Iran sanctions regime, raised the possibility that the swap deals were a means of flouting restrictions on trade with Iran.

"If confirmed, such transactions may reflect an avenue for procurement of a raw material in a manner that circumvents sanctions," the 49-page report said in reference to the media reports on the swap deals. "The companies involved have stated that they have halted those transactions."

Reuters has sought comment from both companies regarding the report, which was delivered to the U.N. Security Council's Iran sanctions committee earlier this month.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that Glencore's head of aluminum, Gary Fegel, is set to leave the company, the first high-profile departure since the commodity trading giant closed its purchase of miner Xstrata this month. The timing and reason for his exit after 12 years at Glencore are unclear.

The experts' annual report said they have found evidence that Tehran routinely attempts to flout the sanctions applied against Iran over its nuclear program, which Western powers and their allies suspect is aimed at producing weapons but the Iranians say is for peaceful electricity generation.

"Iran continues to seek items for its prohibited activities from abroad by using multiple and increasingly complex procurement methods, including front companies, intermediaries, false documentation, and new routes," the experts said.

"These require additional vigilance and expertise on the part of states in order to identify suspicious transactions," it said.

IRANIAN REACTOR CONSTRUCTION

The panel listed 11 violations by Iran since June 2012 and said it has at least six ongoing investigations into possible sanctions violations, including the export of machine tools reported by Spain and the export of technical equipment for use in satellite technology reported by Germany.

The United States reported transfers and attempted transfers of items linked to Iran's nuclear program, including vacuum equipment for test stands, pressure transducers, vacuum pumps and materials for fabrication of centrifuge machine components like magnetic tape, marching steel and aluminum alloys.

The United States also reported a violation involving the transfer of specialized metals to several entities in Iran associated with the ballistic missile program.

The report said recent Iran sanctions violations had also been reported by Sweden, Bahrain, France, Britain and an unidentified country listed as "State X".

The experts said Iran had not demonstrated any significant new missile capabilities in the past year, but had continued to violate Security Council resolutions by launching missiles.

"Despite at least the partial success in making its ballistic missile program indigenous, Iran remains reliant on foreign suppliers for technology, some components and raw materials," the panel said.

"Preventing supply of these items is critical for international efforts to slow Iran's prohibited ballistic missiles activities," it said.

The experts recommended the Security Council sanction one entity - Pentane Chemistry Industries "for the procurement of valves for use in the Arak Heavy Water reactor." The company was blacklisted by the United States in 2012.

The reactor near the central Iranian town of Arak is under construction and nuclear analysts have said it could yield plutonium for nuclear arms if the spent fuel is reprocessed, something Iran has said it has no intention of doing.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog in Vienna said on Wednesday Iran was pressing ahead with construction of the Arak plant.

The panel also said it was aware of reports of weapons being transferred to Syria, in violation of the U.N. ban on Iranian arms exports, through Iraqi airspace, but that Iraqi authorities had said they checked two shipments and found no arms. The experts did not elaborate further on the allegations.

The eight-member panel of experts were split over whether a seizure of weapons on a ship named Jihan off the coast of Yemen was a violation or probable violation of the Iran arms embargo.

Yemen has said its coast guard seized missiles and rockets on January 23 believed to have been sent by Iran. Iran has denied any connection to the weapons, which were found aboard a vessel off the coast in an operation coordinated with the U.S. Navy.

"Five members of the panel found that all available information placed Iran at the center of the Jihan operation. The crew bypassed routine immigration and airport security procedures while in Iran. The voyage originated in Iranian territorial waters," the experts' report said.

"Three members of the panel noted that no information was found about the time and location that the arms and other items were loaded on the Jihan," it said.

Highlighting the methods used to hide weapon shipments, the panel described one of the hiding places it found on board the Jihan when its members inspected the vessel.

"The seized items were concealed in four compartments hidden by diesel fuel tanks which could not be accessed from the deck," the report said. "These hidden compartments could be accessed only after the diesel fuel tanks were emptied."

Diplomatic sources familiar with the investigation of the ship have told Reuters that there were indications the ship's ultimate destination may have been Somalia, but there was no mention of this in the Panel of Experts report.

Vertical 'Pinkhouses:' The Future Of Urban Farming?

The idea of vertical farming is all the rage right now. Architects and engineers have come up with spectacular concepts for lofty buildings that could function as urban food centers of the future.

In Sweden, for example, they're planning a 177-foot skyscraper to farm leafy greens at the edge of each floor. But so far, most vertical gardens that are up and running actually look more like large greenhouses than city towers. And many horticulturists don't think sky-high farms in cities are practical.

"The idea of taking a skyscraper and turning it into a vertical farming complex is absolutely ridiculous from an energy perspective," says horticulturist Cary Mitchell of Purdue University, who's been working on ways to grow plants in space for more than 20 years.

The future of vertical farming, Mitchell thinks, lies not in city skyscrapers, but rather in large warehouses located in the suburbs, where real estate and electricity are cheaper.

And oh, yeah, instead of being traditional greenhouses lit by fluorescent lamps, he says these plant factories will probably be "pinkhouses," glowing magenta from the mix of blue and red LEDs.

Light is a major problem with vertical farming. When you stack plants on top of each other, the ones at the top shade the ones at the bottom. The only way to get around it is to add artificial light ? which is expensive both financially and environmentally.

Vertical farmers can lower the energy bill, Mitchell says, by giving plants only the wavelengths of light they need the most: the blue and red.

"Twenty years ago, research showed that you could grow lettuce in just red light," Mitchell says. "If you add a little bit of blue, it grows better."

Plant's photosynthesis machinery is tuned to absorb red and blue light most efficiently. They have a handful of other pigments in their leaves that catch other wavelengths, but the red and blue wavelengths are the big ones, supplying the majority of the light needed to grow.

Cary Mitchell and Celina Gomez, of Purdue University, harvest tomatoes grown next to a tower of blue and red LEDs.

Courtesy of Purdue Agricultural Communication photo/Tom Campbell

So why LEDs? They're super energy efficient in general, but unlike traditional greenhouse lamps, they can be tuned to specific wavelengths. Why use all of ROYGBIV when just RB will do?

And there's another advantage to using LEDs in greenhouses and vertical farming, Mitchell says: Because these lights are cooler, you can place them close to the plants ? even stacked plants ? and lose even less energy.

Recently, Mitchell and his graduate student designed a 9-foot-tall tower of lights and grew tomato plants right up against it. "As the plants get taller, we turn on the [light] panels higher up," he explains. "It takes about two months before all the panels are on."

The towers cut energy consumption by about 75 percent, Mitchell and his team reported earlier this year.

Right now, experiments are using these specialized LEDs to supplement natural light, not replace it.

But as LEDs get more and more efficient, could growers forgo the natural light altogether and grow crops completely in enclosed rooms, where they're protected from temperature changes or damaging pests?

That's exactly what Barry Holtz, at Caliber Biotherapeutics, is already doing.

His farms have never seen the light of day.

Plants at Caliber Biotherapeutics grow under blue and red LEDs, with wavelengths of light that match those that get absorbed by the photosynthetic machinery.

He and his company have built a 150,000-square-foot "plant factory" in Texas that is completely closed off from the outside world. They grow 2.2 million plants, stacked up 50 feet high, all underneath the magenta glow of blue and red LEDS.

"A photon is a terrible thing to waste," Holtz tells The Salt. "So we developed these lights to correctly match the photosynthesis needs of our plants. We get almost 20 percent faster growth rate and save a lot energy."

Holtz is growing a tobacco-like plant to make new drugs and vaccines. The indoor pinkhouse gives him tight control over the expensive crops, so his team can stop diseases and contamination.

Holtz says this type of indoor gardening isn't going to replace traditional farms anytime soon. It's still relatively expensive for growing food. "We couldn't compete with iceberg lettuce farmers," he says, "but for certain specialty crops, the economics wouldn't be so bad."

And, he says, the pinkhouse is actually quite efficient when it comes to water and electricity. "We've done some calculations, and we lose less water in one day than a KFC restaurant uses, because we recycle all of it."

Peregrine rises on agreement for late-stage study

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Shares of Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc. surged Monday after the company said it would move ahead with a late-stage trial of its lead product, the experimental lung cancer treatment bavituximab.

THE SPARK: Peregrine said in a release it reached an agreement with the Food and Drug Administration on a phase III study of its drug involving 600 patients. The trial will enroll patients with non-small cell lung cancer whose disease has progressed after treatment with standard therapy. The study will evaluate bavituximab based on patients' overall survival.

The Tustin, Calif.-based drugmaker said it would present final data from its mid-stage studies of the drug at a meeting for cancer specialists on June 1.

THE BIG PICTURE: Peregrine does not have any approved products and bavituximab is its most advanced experimental drug. In early September Peregrine said patients who were treated with bavituximab lived twice as long as patients who received only chemotherapy in a clinical trial.

A few weeks later the company said it had found problems with the reported trial data and its initial analysis couldn't be relied on. Peregrine said the problem appeared to be tied to another company that was contracted to code and distribute the product. In January Peregrine reported that the discrepancies are limited to a single dose of the drug.

SHARE ACTION: Peregrine shares rose 34 cents, or 22 percent, to $1.88 in trading Monday.

Less than a week after a string of tornadoes killed six people in north Texas, a massive storm system that tore through the center of the country on Sunday spawned at least a dozen tornadoes, killed two people, injured dozens more and caused extensive damage from Georgia to Minnesota.

According to the Oklahoma state medical examiner, the two victims?Glen Irish, 79, and Billy Hutchinson, 76?were from hard-hit Shawnee. At least 39 other people were injured on Sunday, Oklahoma emergency management director Albert Ashwood said.

James Hoke, a resident of Steelman Estates Mobile Home Park in Shawnee, told the Associated Press his neighborhood "took a dead hit."

"My father-in-law was buried under the house," he said. "We had to pull Sheetrock off of him."

    [Slideshow: Tornadoes rip through Plains]

A tornado at least a half-mile wide was spotted near Pink, Okla., outside Oklahoma City, prompting the National Weather Service in Norman to issue an unusually dire warning:

You could be killed if not underground or in a tornado shelter. Complete destruction of neighborhoods, businesses and vehicles will occur. Flying debris will be deadly to people and animals.

"Large tornado west of Pink!" a tweet from the Norman office read. "Take cover RIGHT NOW in Pink! DO NOT WAIT!"

"Overpasses are NOT tornado shelters!" read another. "Do not park under them! You are keeping others from getting to safety!"

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin declared states of emergency in 16 counties. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said hailstones as large as baseballs were seen throughout the region.

According to the National Weather Service, more severe weather is expected in Oklahoma on Monday, "with very large hail, damaging winds and perhaps tornadoes impacting the region."

From the National Weather Service's Facebook page in Norman:

We are very concerned that we could be dealing with dangerous storms?possibly including tornadoes?around school dismissal time today, and certainly during afternoon rush hour. Please stay very alert today and think about how you might need to change your plans this afternoon. Please share this with your family and friends.

Videos of several tornadoes that touched down in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri were posted to YouTube:

As well as plenty of hail footage:

Who is building what in Sochi for 2014 Olympics

SOCHI, Russia (AP) ? The cost of the 2014 Winter Games in the Russian city of Sochi now stands at $51 billion, making it the most expensive Olympics in history. More than half of the bill is being footed by Russian state-controlled companies and business tycoons. A look at what the major players are building in Sochi:

    THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT

The government is building five of the six arenas in the coastal cluster, which will host indoor competitions such as ice skating, for about $10 billion. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who is overseeing the Sochi preparations, said the government will spend a total of about $18 billion before the games begin in February 2014.

    GAZPROM

The world's largest natural gas producer, a publicly traded company, has many Olympic projects in Sochi, including building a cross-country skiing and biathlon center, one of the three Olympic villages and an Alpine ski resort. Gazprom is also building a power station in a Sochi suburb for about $740 million and a pipeline to bring gas supplies to the Sochi area for about $1 billion. The total price tag for Gazprom stands at roughly $3 billion.

    POTANIN

Metals tycoon Vladimir Potanin, whose fortune is estimated at $14.3 billion, started building the Roza Khutor ski resort before Sochi was picked to hold the 2014 Olympics. Infrastructure required by the International Olympic Committee cost $500 million, boosting his total bill in Sochi to $2.5 billion. In addition to the Alpine ski runs at Roza Khutor, Potanin's holding company, Interros, has built an Olympic village and a snowboarding and freestyle park.

    DERIPASKA

Metals tycoon Oleg Deripaska, estimated to be worth $8.5 billion, is mainly involved in infrastructure development in Sochi. His holding company, Basic Element, is building an Olympic village, a sea port and has just finished revamping the Sochi airport. Basic Element expects to spend a total of $1.4 billion in Sochi.

    SBERBANK

The state-controlled bank is set to spend at least $1.3 billion building a media center in Sochi, as well as a ski jump complex.

Tree health policy to 'stop spread'

Strengthening biosecurity at UK borders and a plant health risk register would help protect the nation's trees from pests and diseases, a report concludes.

The recommendations were made by the Tree Health and Plant Biosecurity Expert Taskforce, convened by the UK environment secretary.

Tree experts have warned that UK tree species face an "unprecedented threat" from non-native pests and diseases.

The report was unveiled on Monday at the 100th Chelsea Garden Show.

The taskforce, convened in November 2012 after the potential devastating ash dieback disease was recorded for the first time in the wider environment, to review domestic and international risks to UK trees and shrubs from new and emerging pests and diseases.

Taskforce chairman Prof Chris Gilligan said: "The UK needs to be better prepared for threats to plant health.

"In the last few years alone, several previously unknown pests and pathogens have emerged, posing significant risks to the UK's crops as well as trees in woodlands, commercial forests and in urban environments."

Plant scientists at a number of government bodies, including the Forestry Commission and the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera), have warned that the threat from pathogens was continuing to grow as a result of increasing levels of international trade and travel, and changes to the environment.

    Import ban

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson welcomed the report's recommendations, adding that plant health was one of Defra's top priorities.

"We are already working on implementing a plant health risk register and are putting plans in place to predict and control the spread of tree diseases," he said.

    Symptoms of ash dieback

    • Diseased saplings typically display dead tops and side shoots.
    • Lesions often found at base of dead side shoots.
    • Lesions on branch or stem can cause wilting of foliage above.
    • Disease affects mature trees by killing off new growth.

Mr Paterson added that he planned to hold a summit "with all the main people, groups and businesses who have an interest in our trees".

He also revealed that he planned to impose an import ban on sweet chestnut trees from areas where sweet chestnut blight was considered a problem.

Recently, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) called for an import ban as the blight (caused by the fungus Cryphonectria parasitica), usually fatal to infected trees, continued to spread through much of mainland Europe.

The UK had a close escape in late 2011 when the disease was identified at nine locations but the infected trees were destroyed before the fungus became established in the surrounding environment.

Speaking to the BBC, Fera's head of plant health public engagement Dr David Slawson echoed Prof Gilligan's views: "Firstly, it is important to say that is very difficult to prioritise what are the main threats but I would always say the main threat is 'unknown'."

"It may sound slightly alarming, but the likes of Phytophthora ramorum was not defined by science when it started causing problems."

The Forestry Commission said P. ramorum, first found in the UK in 2002, infected few trees until 2009 when the pathogen was found infecting and killing large numbers of Japanese larch trees - an important economic timber species - in South West England.

Since then, it has been recorded in all other British nations and the Northern Ireland.

Prof Gilligan, head of Cambridge University's School of Biological Sciences, said:"By increasing our understanding of what pests and diseases are the biggest threats and how best to mitigate their impact, we can minimise potentially devastating outbreaks."

The report was launched at the Stop the Spread show garden at the Chelsea Garden Show, which was designed to contrast "the beauty of a British garden with the potentially damaging effects that plant pests, diseases and invasive non-native species could have on our gardens, woodlands and countryside".

Sony Xperia UL announced for Japan: 5-inch 1080p display and 15-frame burst photography skills (video)

Sony Xperia UL announced for Japan 5inch 1080p display and 15frame burst photography skills video

The FCC may have spoiled the surprise, but Sony's now gone official with yet another smartphone and this one's for its native Japan. The Xperia UL appears to be a slightly thicker riff on the Xperia Z, matching the display of the company's early-2013 flagship, with a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) ticking behind the 5-inch 1080p screen. It's worth noting that it's a substantial resolution bump from the similar-looking 720p NTT DoCoMo Xperia A. Although it's not the Snapdragon 600 rumored, Qualcomm's S4 Pro flexes its muscle through Exmor RS 13-megapixel camera sensor, offering up the ability to capture 15 frames in a second. NFC, naturally, is already in attendance as well as the Felica wireless payment system. You'll also get the benefits of both a physical camera button and water (IPX5/8) and dust resistance (IP5X) -- two features in tandem that should help separate it from Sony's pair of existing 5-inch 1080p smartphones. The Xperia UL will launch on KDDI's au network in white, black and hot pink colors on May 25th. Check out the obligatory close-up ad after the break.

Update: The Xperia UL runs on an S4 Pro processor, not the Snapdragon 600 initially stated.
