Central Valley irrigation intensifies rainfall, storms across the Southwest

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Agricultural irrigation in California's Central Valley doubles the amount of water vapor pumped into the atmosphere, ratcheting up rainfall and powerful monsoons across the interior Southwest, according to a new study by UC Irvine scientists.

Moisture on the vast farm fields evaporates, is blown over the Sierra Nevada and dumps 15 percent more than average summer rain in numerous other states. Runoff to the Colorado River increases by 28 percent, and the Four Corners region experiences a 56 percent boost in runoff. While the additional water supply can be a good thing, the transport pattern also accelerates the severity of monsoons and other potentially destructive seasonal weather events.

"If we stop irrigating in the Valley, we'll see a decrease in stream flow in the Colorado River basin," said climate hydrologist Jay Famiglietti, senior author on the paper, which will be published online Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The basin provides water for about 35 million people, including those in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix. But the extra water vapor also accelerates normal atmospheric circulation, he said, "firing up" the annual storm cycle and drawing in more water vapor from the Gulf of Mexico as well as the Central Valley.

When the additional waves of moisture bump into developing monsoons, Famiglietti said, "it's like throwing fuel on a fire."

He and colleague Min-Hui Lo, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California Center for Hydrologic Modeling who is now at National Taiwan University, painstakingly entered regional irrigation levels into global rainfall and weather models and traced the patterns.

"All percent differences in the paper are the differences between applying irrigation to the Central Valley and not applying it," Famiglietti said. "That's the point of the study ? and the beauty of using computer models. You can isolate the phenomenon that you wish to explore, in this case, irrigation versus no irrigation."

Famiglietti's team plans to increase the scope of the work to track how major human water usage elsewhere in the world affects neighboring areas too. A better understanding of irrigation's impact on the changing climate and water availability could improve resource management in parched or flooded areas.

Physicians' brain scans indicate doctors can feel their patients' pain -- and their relief

Physicians' brain scans indicate doctors can feel their patients' pain -- and their relief

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

A patient's relationship with his or her doctor has long been considered an important component of healing. Now, in a novel investigation in which physicians underwent brain scans while they believed they were actually treating patients, researchers have provided the first scientific evidence indicating that doctors truly can feel their patients' pain ? and can also experience their relief following treatment.

Led by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Program in Placebo Studies and Therapeutic Encounter (PiPS) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School, the new findings, which appear on-line today in Molecular Psychiatry, help to illuminate one of the more intangible aspects of health care ? the doctor/patient relationship.

"Our findings showed that the same brain regions that have previously been shown to be activated when patients receive placebo therapies are similarly activated in the brains of doctors when they administer what they think are effective treatments," explains first author Karin Jensen, PhD, an investigator in the Department of Psychiatry and Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at MGH and member of the PiPS. Notably, she adds, the findings also showed that the physicians who reported greater ability to take things from the patients' perspective, that is, to empathize with patients' feelings, experienced higher satisfaction during patients' treatments, as reflected in the brain scans.

"By demonstrating that caring for patients involves a complex set of brain events, including deep understanding of the patient's facial and body expressions, possibly in combination with the physician's own expectations of relief and feelings of reward, we have been able to elucidate the neurobiology underlying caregiving," adds senior author Ted Kaptchuk, director of the PiPS and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "Our findings provide early evidence of the importance of interacting brain networks between patients and caregivers and acknowledge the doctor/patient relationship as a valued component of health care, alongside medications and procedures."

Previous investigations have demonstrated that a brain region associated with pain relief (right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, VLPFC) and a region associated with reward (rostral anterior cingulate cortex, rACC) are activated when patients experience the placebo effect, which occurs when patients show improvement from treatments that contain no active ingredients. The placebo effect accounts for significant portions of clinical outcomes in many illnesses -- including pain, depression and anxiety.

Although behavioral research has suggested that physicians' expectations influence patients' clinical outcomes and help determine patients' placebo responses, until now little effort has been directed to understanding the biology underlying the physician component of the clinical relationship. Jensen and her colleagues hypothesized that the same brain regions that are activated during patients' placebo responses ? the VLPFC and rACC -- would similarly be activated in the brains of physicians as they treated patients. They also hypothesized that a physician's perspective-taking skills would influence the outcomes.

To test these hypotheses, the scientists developed a unique equipment arrangement that would enable them to conduct functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the physicians' brains while the doctors had face-to-face interactions with patients, including observing patients as they underwent pain treatments.

The experiment included 18 physicians (all of whom had received their medical degree within the last 10 years and represented nine separate medical specialties). Two 25-year-old females played the role of "patients" and followed a rehearsed script. The experiment called for the participating physicians to administer pain relief with what they thought was a pain-relieving electronic device, but which was actually a non-active "sham" device.

To ensure that the physicians believed that the sham device really worked, the investigators first administered a dose of "heat pain" to the physicians' forearms to gauge pain threshold and then "treated" them with the fake machine. During the treatments, the investigators reduced the heat stimulation, to demonstrate to the participants that the therapy worked. The physicians underwent fMRI scans while they experienced the painful heat stimulation so that investigators could see exactly which brain regions were activated during first-person perception of pain.

In the second portion of the experiment, each physician was introduced to a patient and asked to perform a standardized clinical examination, which was conducted in a typical exam room for approximately 20 minutes. (The clinical exam was performed in order to establish a realistic rapport between the physician and patient before fMRI scanning took place, and was comparable to a standard U.S. doctor's appointment.) At this point the physician also answered a questionnaire, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, used to measure the participant's self-reported perspective-taking skills.

During the third step, says Jensen, the physician and patient were led into the scanner room. "The physician went inside the scanner and was equipped with a remote control that could activate the 'analgesic device' when prompted," she explains. Mirrors inside the scanner enabled physicians to maintain eye contact with the patient, who was seated on a chair next to the scanner's bed and hooked up to both the thermal pain stimulator and the pain-relieving device.

Then, in a randomized order, physicians were instructed to either treat a patient's pain or to press a control button that provided no relief. When physicians were told not to activate pain relief, the "patient" exhibited a painful facial expression while the physicians watched. When the physicians were instructed to treat the patients' pain, they could see that the subjects' faces were neutral and relaxed, the result of pain relief. During these doctor-patient interactions, fMRI scans measured the doctors' brain activations.

Following the scanning session, the physicians were removed from the scanner and told exactly how the experiment had been performed, says Jensen. "If the physician did not agree with the deceptive component of the study, they were given the opportunity to withdraw their data. No one did this."

As predicted, the authors found that while treating patients, the physicians activated the right VLPFC region of the brain, a region previously implicated in the placebo response. Furthermore, Jensen adds, the physicians' ability to take the patients' viewpoints correlated to brain activations and subjective ratings; physicians who reported high perspective-taking skills were more likely to show activation in the rACC brain region, which is associated with reward.

"We already know that the physician-patient relationship provides solace and can even relieve many symptoms," adds Kaptchuk. "Now, for the first time, we've shown that caring for patients encompasses a unique neurobiology in physicians. Our ultimate goal is to transform the 'art of medicine' into the 'science of care,' and this research is an important first step in this process as we continue investigations to find out how patient-clinician interactions can lead to measurable clinical outcomes in patients."

Michael Giltz: Theater: The Show Must Go On! Barry Manilow Opens On Broadway

MANILOW ON BROADWAY ** 1/2 out of ****
ST. JAMES THEATRE

What drama! Laid low by the flu, old schooler trouper Barry Manilow had to cancel shows and delay his Broadway opening night. But with the legendary Clive Davis and legions of devoted fans in place, he finally hit the stage on Tuesday night and belted it out as best he could.

Not since Hugh Jackman has there been a show on the Great White Way as critic proof as this one. Before his illness, Manilow was packing them in and hitting grosses that ranked alongside mega-hits like Wicked and The Book Of Mormon. Obviously, the chance for fanilows to see him in the relatively intimate setting of the St. James Theatre is a powerful lure and whatever critics say, they'll keep coming as long as the show keeps extending.

It's a tricky night to review since Manilow was clearly not at full steam or at times even half steam. His voice was sketchy and intentionally mixed low into the sound system so that the music and the backup singers could carry him as much as possible. He's a real pro, though and always engagingly modest. If he pulled off a big note, Manilow would amusingly make a face of self-deprecating surprise. He apologized repeatedly, urged people to come back again soon (when his voice would fully recover) and worked his voice with skill, making the most of what he had. (And dashing off stage for a second towards the end of the evening, only to come out sounding -- briefly -- stronger than he had the entire night.)

Did it matter to the fans? It did not. They yelled and screamed and sang along and listened to the old stories and old jokes with delight. Manilow said at the start he was so sick, "I coughed up enough phlegm to float Fire Island. " Later he joked (sort of) that he was the Justin Bieber of his era. "No seriously," he said. "Ask your mother." To which the woman sitting behind me responded to her seatmate, "Don't worry. She's here!"

At 69 years old, Manilow wouldn't have the voice he had in the 1970s even at the best of times, of course. But he's a showman. Even when he's done singing or runs out of breath on a song, the arrangement builds to a crescendo and Manilow flings his arms out wide at the musical finale as if he's just hit a high C and the audience loves it.

Without irony, Manilow says the audience will probably know every single song he's going to sing that night and isn't that amazing? "Not many people could say that," he notes. This is schmaltz of the sort Hugh Jackman might winkingly refer to or Martin Short out and out satirize but it comes across somehow sweetly or perhaps endearingly boastful from Manilow, who's been a pop music fixture for 40 years. He's got 25 Top 40 hits and almost twice as many on the Adult Contemporary charts, a radio format where Manilow is considered the most popular artist of all time.

And he promised to play them all (in a knowing nod to Judy Garland), from "Looks Like We Made It" to "Copacabana (At The Copa)" to "I Write The Songs" to "Can't Smile Without You." (Actually, we sang that last one for him.) While most of them are not standards as such (that is, songs that are covered regularly by other artists), they are very durable pop songs indeed. Given Manilow's strong album sales in the last few years with his tributes to the 1950s and so on, this was not a nostalgia fest as such but a victory lap.

What it wasn't, unfortunately, was any attempt to shape a serious show that would make the artistic case for Manilow that he deserves. Musically, you might have chosen just a bare stage with Manilow and a Steinway (like the one he famously bought with his hard-earned dollars early in his career). Or you might go the other route and bring on a full orchestra. But all they did was take his touring band, plop them on the stage and turn up the volume. The arrangements were dull and obvious (though some of this might have been compensation for his voice), the look was threadbare and I doubt they even bothered to whip up a new costume for Manilow. Larry Amoros is credited with "special material" but in general there is no attempt to deliver anything other than what you might have seen from Manilow on tour a thousand times before.

The confetti cannon at the end (noticeably skimpy on confetti) and the very weak graphics that flash behind him throughout the night are touches that simply won't do. When they show a video clip of waves crashing on a shore during an otherwise strong vocal performance of "Even Now," you realize that they weren't really trying. Those lazy gestures overshadowed his strongest moments, like a video duet with himself (a la Barbra Streisand), a very sweet "I Am Your Child" from his debut and a key song from his musical Harmony.

That's a pity. His catalog is strong enough that Manilow could have delivered something special and made this stand not just another stop on his tour but a genuine event. Not that his fans will agree with one word of this; they'll leave happy and humming the tunes they've known for so long. Hey, I'm playing the CD Ultimate Manilow while I write this. We're coming up on the 30th anniversary of his 1984 masterpiece 2:00 A.M. Paradise Cafe; is it too much to hope he'll play even smaller spaces, like a genuine jazz clubs, and do that one justice?

For those Fanilows who can't make it to New York City, here's a vintage video of Barry Manilow singing his break out hit and first of three #1 songs, "Mandy."

Michele Cardoso, Brazilian Nightclub Fire Victim, Pleaded For Help On Facebook Before She Died

A young woman trapped inside the deadly Brazilian nightclub blaze this weekend posted one final message to Facebook, pleading for help as the building burned.

As Gawker notes, Michele Cardoso, a 20-year-old medical student, was at Boate Kiss on Sunday with her sister and her boyfriend, Jo?o Paulo Pozzobon.

About 50 minutes after the fire began, Cardoso was able to access Facebook one last time.

"Fire at KISS help," she posted to the site.

All three patrons died in the blaze, according to Gawker. Pozzobon's Facebook page still shows his Foursquare check-in at Boate Kiss. Below the post, one user wrote: "The last check-in."

One of Cardoso's friends told Brazil Extra that she had always been a very cheerful person.

More than 230 people were killed in the crowded Santa Maria club after pyrotechnics ignited the soundproof foam.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Dr. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a professor at the nearby medical school, told the Associated Press.

At least three people have been arrested in connection with the blaze, including the club's co-owner.

WindowsAndroid runs Google's mobile OS natively on the Windows kernel

Sure, you could enjoy Android on your PC through dual-booting or virtualization, but the folks at Socketeq have whipped up yet another alternative: a port of Mountain View's mobile OS, fittingly dubbed WindowsAndroid, that runs natively on the Windows kernel (under Vista, 7 and 8) instead of Linux. Not only does the operating system run speedily since its free of virtualization chains, but it serves up the appropriate tablet or smartphone UI based on window size, and plays nice with keyboards and mice, to boot. Socketeq's solution serves up the full Android experience, but you'll have to separately flash the Google apps that typically come baked in, according to Android Police. Ice Cream Sandwich is the freshest flavor of Android to have undergone the kernel-replacement treatment, and it's currently being offered as a free "first-try" download at the source.

What Are The Benefits Of Sales Training? | MeMetics

Most businesses will have a team of sales staff; this is because each and every business in the world is trying to sell you something. It is a very difficult job trying to persuade people to buy something, when in fact they don?t actually want the item or product to start with. Your sales team must have expert knowledge in the products they are trying to sell. If they do have the knowledge and are still struggling to make significant sales, you may want to consider enrolling your sales team on a sales training course.

What Is A Sales Training Course?

Before you enrol any of your staff onto a sales training course, you are going to want to know what it is exactly. The whole idea of the course is to identify your employee?s strengths and weaknesses. Once you discover what their strength and weaknesses you will be able to put them through a number of different tests and situations to work on them. The employee will then be trained to change some of their more weak areas.

Being a sales person is quite a straight forward job as long you know the procedures that are in place. As long as you enjoy your job and you are a confident person you can be tuned in to sell products successfully.? If you believe that your employees already have the confidence and motivation to sell your products and services, however they are just struggling to seal the deal with clients; you may want to attend a management sales training course. These courses work out much cheaper rather than sending your whole sales team on a course. You can make notes and bring the vital information back and share it amongst your sales team.

The information that you pick up in this course will help you guide your employees to learn how to really push extra sales.

How Will A Sales Training Course Help?

During the sales training course, your employee?s will be given top tips that are extremely useful when they are trying to complete a sale. It may be the case that your employee?s do not have confidence in themselves, sales training will allow them to see that they are just doing their job and persuading people to buy into a trustworthy item or service.

How Will Your Business Benefit From Sales Training?

Once your employee?s have taken the information from the course, you should immediately start to see a rise in sales created. Even though you will have the initial of paying to go on the course, you will get a lot more money back in the future.

Paul has his own business and has found management sales training courses are extremely helpful. For more information, go to http://www.mlptraining.co.uk/

Chameleon pulsar baffles astronomers

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Using a satellite X-ray telescope combined with terrestrial radio telescopes the pulsar was found to flip on a roughly half-hour timescale between two extreme states; one dominated by X-ray pulses, the other by a highly-organised pattern of radio pulses.

The research was led by Professor Wim Hermsen from The Netherlands Institute for Space Research and the University of Amsterdam and will appear in the journal Science on the 25th January 2013.

Researchers from Jodrell Bank Observatory, as well as institutions around the world, used simultaneous observations with the X-ray satellite XMM-Newton and two radio telescopes; the LOw Frequency Array (LOFAR) in the Netherlands and the Giant Meter Wave Telescope (GMRT) in India to reveal this so far unique behaviour.

Pulsars are small spinning stars that are about the size of a city, around 20 km in diameter. They emit oppositely directed beams of radiation from their magnetic poles. Just like a lighthouse, as the star spins and the beam sweeps repeatedly past Earth we see a brief flash.

Some pulsars produce radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, including at X-ray and radio wavelengths. Despite being discovered more than 45 years ago the exact mechanism by which pulsars shine is still unknown.

It has been known for some time that some radio-emitting pulsars flip their behaviour between two (or even more) states, changing the pattern and intensity of their radio pulses. The moment of flip is both unpredictable and sudden. It is also known from satellite-borne telescopes that a handful of radio pulsars can also be detected at X-ray frequencies. However, the X-ray signal is so weak that nothing is known of its variability.

To find out if the X-rays could also flip the scientists studied a particular pulsar called PSR B0943+10, one of the first to be discovered. It has radio pulses which change in form and brightness every few hours with some of the changes happening within about a second.

Dr Ben Stappers from The University of Manchester's School of Physics and Astronomy said: "The behaviour of this pulsar is quite startling, it's as if it has two distinct personalities. As PSR B0943+10 is one of the few pulsars also known to emit X-rays, finding out how this higher energy radiation behaves as the radio changes could provide new insight into the nature of the emission process."

Since the source is a weak X-ray emitter, the team used the most sensitive X-ray telescope in existence, the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton on board a spacecraft orbiting Earth. The observations took place over six separate sessions of about six hours in duration. To identify the exact moment of flip in the pulsar's radio behaviour the X-ray observations were tracked simultaneously with two of the largest radio telescopes in the world, LOFAR and the GMRT.

What the scientists found was that whilst the X-rays did indeed change their behaviour at the same time as the radio emission, as might have been expected, in the state where the radio signal is strong and organised the X-rays were weak, and when the radio emission switched to weak the X-rays got brighter.

Commenting on the study's findings the project leader Wim Hermsen says: "To our surprise we found that when the brightness of the radio emission halved, the X-ray emission brightened by a factor of two! Furthermore the intense X-rays have a very different character from those in the radio-bright state, since they seem to be thermal in origin and to pulse with the neutron star's rotation period."

Dr Stappers says this is an exciting discovery: "As well as brightening in the X-rays we discovered that the X-ray emission also shows pulses, something not seen when the radio emission is bright. This was the opposite of what we had expected. I've likened the changes in the pulsar to a chameleon. Like the animal the star changes in reaction to its environment, such as a change in temperature."

Geoff Wright from the University of Sussex adds: "Our observations strongly suggest that a temporary "hotspot" appears close to the pulsar's magnetic pole which switches on and off with the change of state. But why a pulsar should undergo such dramatic and unpredictable changes is completely unknown."

The next step for the researchers is to look at other objects which have similar behaviour to investigate what happens to the X-ray emission. Later this year there will be another round of simultaneous X-ray and radio observations of a second pulsar. These observations will include the Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Skin Cancer Indentifying Apps Fail More than Half the Time ...

Smartphone apps are great at a lot of things. They can make our pictures look terrible ?artistic?, they can keep us connected to friends, they can even set us up on random blind dates with strangers we know nothing about, but it turns out they?re not great at identifying skin cancer ? at least not most of them. A new study shows that smartphone apps designed to identify cancerous lesions misdiagnose them more than half the time. Good news, dermatologists! You haven?t been replace by robots yet!

The Food and Drug Administration has not approved any of these apps to diagnose anything, let alone cancer, so they do include language in their user agreements that tell people to consult a physician about any suspicious moles. The one I tried on my phone, DoctorMole by Mark Shippen, says it is for educational purposes only, and they take ?no responsibility or liability for any course or treatment that you to take, or not take, based on this applications [sic] results.?

These disclaimers cover the app developers legally, but also give users who actually read them a better sense of what these apps intend to do. While the apps seem to largely fail at identifying a melanoma, they do give users a useful tool to map and track their moles, which could be valuable information for a dermatologist. It also gets people in the habit of examining themselves for signs of cancer, and teaches them what to look for. They also tell users to consult a qualified doctor if they do suspect a mole could be cancerous.

One app, which the study does not identify, does not analyze an image of a mole itself, but rather sends the picture to a certified dermatologist to examine for the cost of $5. This app, or really the doctors behind it, only misdiagnosed one out of 53 lesions that were cancerous. It seems that for now at least, a trained set of eyes are better at identifying cancerous lesions than a computer, but these apps could still do some good in terms of education and tracking moles over time.

The image attached to this story was taken by me with the DoctorMole app of a mole on my arm. I had the mole examined by my doctor a few years ago and he, and DoctorMole, say the chances of it being cancerous are minimal. I?ve been keeping an eye on it, and will probably start using DoctorMole, or an app like it, to track photos of the mole over time.

North Ireland Deaths From Mesothelioma and Asbestosis |

Asbestosis Big Problem in Northern Ireland

Asbestosis Lung

?

The Northern Ireland General Register Office, the province?s record keeper, said that mesothelioma and asbestosis were the primary or secondary causes of some 75 deaths annually.

In little more than five years, there have been more than 300 estimated deaths in Northern Ireland from?asbestos exposure, according to a?U.TV article,?citing a recent government report.

This government report also suggests? there?were possibly another 40?lung cancer?deaths each year where asbestosis or mesothelioma were contributing factors. ?Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly?disease?that destroys the linings of the heart, lungs or abdomen. ?Exposure to asbestos is nearly always the?cause of mesothelioma. ?And asbestosis is?specifically?a lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos.

The situation is serious were unlike the United States which phased out asbestos in building materials in the 1980s, asbestos continued to be used in Northern Ireland until about 2000. The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) organization predicts the current number of deaths to rise. ?It has organized free training called ?Asbestos Training Pledge NI? as a response to help local?construction workers?protect themselves from asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral once used extensively in building materials because of its high tensile strength, durability, high availability, and low cost. ? Given its? early widespread adoption in the United States, asbestos continues to be a problem there as well. ?Since the 1970s, ?research has linked asbestos exposure definitively to multiple painful and deadly diseases, such as mesothelioma.

Many manufacturers knew their asbestos products posed serious health risks, but some hid this information from both their workers and the public. Have you or a loved one developed mesothelioma after?exposure to asbestos?while at a workplace? ?If so, then call a Lawyer who is an expert in Mesothelioma and Asbestosis, and ask them for a free legal consultation about a potential?mesothelioma lawsuit.

Insurance and retirement needs often overlooked in divorce ...

Washington residents going through a divorce are often advised by a divorce attorney to get a handle on their finances. While many individuals plan for monthly expenses such as rent, food and cellphones; there are often several other important expenses that are forgotten.

Matters related to insurance are typically overlooked by many divorcing individuals. There are those insurance policies that may have been carried by a spouse such as health, dental and vision. When a couple divorces, it's up to each ex-spouse to now provide for their own insurance. Spouses that do not work are often able to either elect continuation of coverage through COBRA or obtain a policy through an independent insurance provider. These options, however, are often more expensive than employer-supported plans.

Other insurance matters frequently overlooked in divorce relate to home and car insurance. Oftentimes couples opt to bundle home and car insurance with one provider. When a spouse moves out of the family home and must obtain their own home and vehicle, however, they must also obtain new insurance policies. The monthly premiums may be higher on these new policies which may catch some individuals off guard.

Retirement and employer-provided 401(k) s are another often-forgotten financial consideration during a divorce. Again this most impacts individuals who have either not worked outside the home or have chosen not to start their own employer-provided 401(k). An individual who was previously relying on the retirement accounts of a spouse will need to take steps to start their own retirement savings. When possible, additional monies should be funded to new retirement accounts to make up for lost time.

Going through a divorce often presents many financial challenges. Being prepared for unexpected costs associated with insurance and retirement matters, however, can benefit an individual while negotiating a divorce settlement.

(AP) ? Pakistan's top court ordered the arrest of the prime minister in a corruption case Tuesday, the latest clash between the government and a judiciary that has repeatedly pressured the country's political leaders.

The ruling is sure to inflame the already antagonistic relationship between the court and the government, pushing the country toward yet another political crisis. It also could provide ammunition to Tahir-ul-Qadri, a firebrand Muslim cleric who was leading tens of thousands of people in a second day of rallies in Islamabad to press for the removal of the government, which he criticized as corrupt and indifferent to the common man.

The Supreme Court order against Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was related to a case involving private power stations set up to provide electricity to energy-starved Pakistan. The judges are investigating allegations that the bidding process was marred by corruption.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ordered the arrest of 16 people involved in the case, including Ashraf, who previously served as minister for water and power, said the written court order.

An adviser to the prime minister, Fawad Chaudhry, said any attempt to arrest the prime minister would be unconstitutional since he enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.

"We consider it a judicial coup, and it is part of a greater plan to derail democracy," Chaudhry said.

The Supreme Court clashed repeatedly with the government over the last year, especially over an old corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari in Swiss courts. Pakistan's top court convicted Ashraf's predecessor, Yousuf Raza Gilani, of contempt of court for refusing to reopen the case and ousted him from office.

The judges pressured Ashraf as well, and the government finally agreed to the court's demand to ask the Swiss to pursue the case ? which Swiss authorities have said privately they have no intention of doing because Zardari enjoys immunity while in office.

It was unclear whether there was any connection between the Supreme Court's order and Qadri's rally. But some speculated it was a scripted one-two blow by the chief justice and the cleric to strike at their opponents in the government.

Qadri has seized on alleged corruption by Pakistani politicians to rally support for his protest against the government. The cleric rocketed to national prominence after his return from Canada late last year, and his message has galvanized many Pakistanis who say the government has brought them only misery.

But critics fear that Qadri and his demands for election reforms may derail the country's upcoming democratic elections, possibly at the behest of the country's powerful military ? allegations denied by the cleric.

Those concerns could intensify following a fiery speech he delivered to protesters Tuesday in which he condemned the country's politicians as corrupt thieves and lavished praise on both the Supreme Court and the military, which has a history of toppling civilian governments in coups.

He said there are only two institutions in Pakistan that "are functioning and performing their duties to fulfill the needs of the people."

"One is the judiciary of Pakistan, and one is the armed forces of Pakistan, and nothing else," said Qadri.

The 61-year-old cleric spoke from inside a bulletproof vehicle parked several hundred meters (yards) from parliament, facing hundreds of police in riot gear who formed a human barrier against at least 30,000 demonstrators packed into the main avenue running through Islamabad. Many waved green and white Pakistani flags and cheered as Qadri spoke.

The determination of the marchers and organizers has thrust them into direct confrontation with the government, which has strongly opposed the rally.

The protest has been largely peaceful ever since demonstrators set off from Lahore on Sunday, but the underlying tension was evident early Tuesday morning when police and protesters clashed hours after Qadri arrived in Islamabad and addressed his supporters. Demonstrators threw rocks at a vehicle, while others held up bullet casings and an empty tear gas canister.

Qadri called on his supporters to stay in the streets until the national and provincial governments were dissolved, saying lawmakers were focused on lining their own pockets rather than addressing the problems of common citizens.

"The lawmakers are the law breakers," said Qadri.

Many supporters have pledged to remain in Islamabad for as long as Qadri demands. They brought blankets to ward off the cold, and many slept in the street Monday night.

Qadri maintained that his movement was not anti-democratic, but he criticized the current political system as broken. Many of his recommendations to fix it, such as rooting out corruption and incompetence, seem more aspirational than grounded in specific details. He has issued numerous vague demands, such as vetting political candidates to make sure they're honest and restructuring the system so that the common people have more opportunity to take part in politics.

His anti-government barbs have hit home with many Pakistanis. Five years after Pakistan's return to democracy from military rule, many are furious at the power outages, terror attacks and unemployment that continue to plague them.

"This system has rotted. It has to change," said 29-year-old Iftikhar Ahmad, who traveled to Islamabad from the central city of Sargodha. "I am going to stay here ... even if I die."

Many protesters like Saqib Sultan, from the eastern city of Lahore, brought their families and slept on the road.

"My wife is here with me, my children are here, and I am here," he said. Like many others, he vowed to stay until their demands are met and called this "the last chance to save Pakistan."

One city official put the number of protesters at roughly 30,000. He did not want to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Some of Qadri's reform proposals have sparked concern that the cleric is being used as a front for the Pakistani military to derail the upcoming vote, just as the country prepares for its first transfer of power from one civilian government to another.

Qadri has called for a military role in picking the caretaker government that will take over temporarily ahead of elections, and has said it could stay in place longer than normal to enact necessary reforms.

Qadri's apparent rise to a national political force in a matter of weeks since his return from Canada have also raised questions about whether he's been getting outside funding.

The government has painted Qadri as a menace to the country's fragile democracy. Chaudhry, the prime minister's adviser, said Qadri's demands are a revolt against the state.

"Thirty thousand people cannot be allowed to take hostage 180 million people," he said.

4 Chinese workers among 9 abducted in Sudan's Darfur: SUNA

Armed men have kidnapped four Chinese nationals and five Sudanese workers engaged in road construction in Sudan's strife-ridden Darfur region, the official SUNA news agency reported on Monday.

The attackers abducted the men and seized their vehicles on Saturday as they were finishing their work for the day, the report said, without naming the construction company nor indicating who was behind the kidnapping.

Recent years have seen a wave of kidnappings for ransom in Darfur, where ethnic rebels a decade ago began an uprising against the Arab-dominated Khartoum government.

Although violence is down from its peak, villages have been razed and rebel-government fighting, banditry, inter-Arab and tribal disputes continue to afflict the region, in Sudan's far west.

Early last year, rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) abducted a group of 29 Chinese workers in southern Sudan.

The captives, who were involved in a road-building project in South Kordofan state, were abducted on January 28, 2011 when the SPLM-N destroyed a Sudanese military convoy between Rashad town and Al-Abbasiya and took over the area.

They were released unharmed after 11 days.

China is Sudan's major trading partner, the largest buyer of Sudanese oil and a key military supplier to the Khartoum regime.

5 Lessons on Investing Learned from the film Boiler Room | Youthful ...

Boiler Room is 1999 film that highlights a college dropout who is hired as a broker at the new mysterious firm, JT Marlin. He gives up his successful Queens based illegal casino, afterwhich several senior brokers recommend him for joining their team. After days of making unsuccessful cold calls, our main character Seth, finds he is getting too good at his craft.

The film highlights the carefree and hedonistic lifestyle of freshmen brokers during the late 90?s bull market. It also delves into the methods by which they convince parties to fork over their money for penny stocks that we later find are fictitious or never even bought and sold. There are definitely elements of Bernie Madoff but also the typical penny stock pump and dump.

Nevertheless there are some incredibly valuable lessons to learn from this highly entertaining film. Day traders and investors will appreciate it for a different kind of action and drama that most films cannot provide.

typical boiler room in an investment setting attempting to sell questionable or unethical investments to clients

Brokers and salespersons work diligently to get a potential client on the phone hooked to buying what they are selling. Boiler rooms do not accept ?wood? as the characters in Boiler Room teach. Every call leads to a sale, it just depends who?s selling, the caller or the the one answering the phone.

Lesson 1: ?Why is Someone so Anxious to Sell me an Investment??

We are not just talking about stocks here but any investment. If someone is so anxious to sell me a security or speculative instrument, what?s in it for them? Obviously there must be some benefit. I was always taught, ?ain?t no free lunch.? Although somethings appear completely free, some sacrifice must be made in order to obtain them.

If a talking head is raving about their special insider report, something like Action Alerts Plus, how do they benefit? Usually, they are compensated monetarily. For average brokers this makes sense and now that we do all of our trading online there is less worry about being sold. More importantly, we have to discover if they are selling and there is little to no benefit for us.

Lesson 2: ?If I?m Buying, why is someone else Selling??

This may sound like the same question, but look carefully at the wording. Remember when you are buying a stock or other financial security you are buying from someone else like yourself, another investor. You are not buying from a broker. They act as an intermediary.

The other person(s) selling has some reason to get rid of what they are holding. It could be that they have already made their profits and are cashing in for a big payday or retirement. Perhaps they are changing strategies at the advise of their research or a financial adviser. Perhaps they see something you don?t and are getting out of it before too late. Perhaps they missed something you did and do not realize the stock is going higher!

Lesson 3: Water cooler Stocks might make better stories than they do good Investments

All throughout the film, brokers at JT Marlin are attempting to sell potential and existing clients on the incredible story of a biomedical company that is going to be taking over the surgical world. Seeing the film it is obvious how fraudulent their actions are but this happens all the time in real life.

Talking heads on the large networks like CNBC and users on forums and message boards love to tell a good story. I am no exception to this. However, one has to be able to take the research and data from the story. We have to be discerning and learn we cannot invest on each and every good story alone.

Lesson 4: Humans can Sacrifice a lot of what really matters to us for a Quick buck

Without giving away too much from the film, characters struggle to regain losses at the expense of their income, their savings, and ultimately loved ones. For most of us investors and day traders this doesn?t become a problem. We know money management or we do not have enough money for this to be a problem.

The problem arises though when we sacrifice all of our time and energy research or checking up on our stocks. We have to limit our time spent watching tickers and doing research. We have to have goals so that we know when we need to be watching and when we can be enjoying our lives outside of our portfolios.

Lesson 5: Know when to call it quits on a Stock or Losing Investment

We see several instances in Boiler Room of characters scammed by JT Marlin who do not know when to call it quits. As investors and traders we develop a nasty habit of trying to correct every loss or bad decision by turning them into zero or gains.

Many investments and stocks are going to lose money. Many times we are going to pick losers by our own choices and random luck. We must develop the discipline to take a loss and move on. Minimizing losses is an art all in itself and is a very integral part of investing.
